Must have for any Mentalist, Hypnotist and Illusionist!

Sleight of Mind was a turning point for me. It was the first book that captured the essence of the actual use (not theory in ideal-world situations) of suggestion and NLP. It also gave me a handle on how to develop my performances, and got me thinking clearly for the first time about my performance persona and what impact it had on my audiences. The NLP tips and tricks are incredibly useful, and the hypnotic induction advice is excellent.

It's a good, broad title that gets you thinking about who you come across as in real life too, and exactly why you get on with some people and not with others. Reading it there'll be times when you'll want to kick yourself for somewhere in the back of your mind already knowing some of its advice, and yet not acting on it. I read it once every few months just to remind myself how important what it says is.

This is a book that has severely got up the noses of NLP'ers and 'regression therapists' for coming clean about some aspects of NLP and Hypnosis. I'm glad to say that this is real life, usable stuff, not the hyped up bilge that most books on the subjects offer. This is the basics, the good stuff that everyone needs to know first if they're going to explore these things in any way, and I've got no hesitation recommending it.

I enjoyed 'Geist' by the same authors, both are good reads and extremely useful to those interested in or performing Mentalism or Hypnosis.

This is a pretty near faultless book for anyone interested in suggestion and its use in 'mentalism' (psychological magical effects). It's packed with bits of useful information about human behaviour, especially your own, which as others have said here are just as useful for non-performers as performers. A warning though, the people-watching this promotes is very, very addictive, and it will have you think twice about every movement and facial expression you and everybody else makes! If I'd read this at the very start of my forays into hypnosis and NLP I could have saved myself a small fortune on other books. Though it was continually recommended to me by performing members of the magic fraternity, I have to admit that I was very skeptical of their take on it because of the words 'mind control' in the title, but I quickly became a convert after reading it. Despite the name, nothing could be less hyped or more down to earth.

What I've never quite understood is how Derren Brown can bring out his book 'Tricks of the Mind' a couple of years after Sleight of Mind and use so much of the latter's material? Take out three hundred or so pretty superfluous pages out of Derren Brown's 'Tricks of the Mind' and you have a lesser version of 'Sleight of Mind' - something I wished I'd known before forking out for Brown's title.

EVERY mentalist should have this and Banacheck's books on their 'must buy' list. Forget the useless double-talk in Knepper's 'Wonder Words', this is the real deal and should not be missed.

The book is very well written, in no-nonsense language, cutting out the rubbish found in so many NLP/Hypnosis/Hypnotic language books. Stripping out the evangelical, self-selling, self-help rubbish makes this a concise (only 161 pages), easily readable volume on the real work behind powerful performance - this isn't just an NLP model, but an actual explanation of the psychological quirks, mechanisms and techniques used by those who give their audiences only the best.

Don't buy this book unless you are prepared to elevate your perfomance up a few levels!

An Extremely Enjoyable Read

I’ll start out by admitting that I’m not fond of self-help books, and I have no interest in books about investing. And I often roll my eyes when I see multiple authors since the mix often is stilted and, at times, creates a bit of literary tug of war. Finally, I wasn’t sure how Susan’s chess knowledge would mesh with Goldstein’s investment knowhow. How could such apparently divergent things compliment each other?

I should mention one other thing: Susan is a friend of mine, and I dreaded the possibility that I might not like the book! After a bit of soul searching, I decided that I would be fair and, if it wasn’t to my taste, I would do my job as a reviewer and be honest about it. Fortunately, all my worries turned out to be unnecessary.

I know nothing about investment. But I do know quite a bit about chess, so I started off reading it with a view towards the chess content, while looking at the investment content from a beginner’s eye. I was surprised when the book started out with Susan discussing her move from Hungary to the U.S. It was extremely interesting (I won’t describe it since I don’t want to ruin a surprising moment or two) and I was impressed when she ended it with, “What if I made a mistake?” It was a brilliant connection to not only mistakes in life, but also in the way a person deals with one’s finances. And so, we were off to the races!

There followed Goldstein, who explained why chess and investing connects in more ways than one might imagine. He also discussed a thing known as “loss aversion,” which actually made perfect sense to me – I could see how this would be helpful to a lot of people.

And so the tone of the book was clear: Goldstein would deal with the heavy hitting investment theory & practice, while Susan mixed chess information, stories, similes, and metaphors to, once again, show that chess and money we’re not complete strangers.

There is a lot of information in this book. The chess material always kept my interest and, shockingly, the investment information also was never boring and, indeed, it sometimes was downright exciting! This was achieved by having two authors who knew their stuff on a world-class level, while also having two authors that wrote in an incredibly clear manner – these two know how to share their knowledge, and it showed on every page.

As a writer, I prize the mix of knowledge and clarity above all other things, and the material from both authors seamlessly complimented each other’s work. Both Susan’s and Goldstein’s prose was exceptionally smooth and enjoyable. Perhaps the biggest surprise though, was the humor. A very nice cartoon-icon version of Susan let you know when her material was taking center stage. Oddly, the cartoon also helped make her stuff more human and personal. I don’t know how they pulled this off, but that’s the effect it had on me. Cartoon-icon Knights were used to let you know when a “Rich As A King Action Point” was offered, and a Douglas Goldstein cartoon-icon appeared when he was discussing some personal story.

I also loved the full-blown cartoon strips that appeared when both Susan and Goldstein were together. These ranged from one to three frames, and all of them were very well done.

I found this book to be absolutely delightful, and extremely well done. I give it my highest recommendation if you are interested in investment strategy, are an adult beginning chess player and want to see chess material that you won’t find in chess books, or if you are a Susan Polgar fan.

Combines two of my great passions!

I will admit it. I am jealous! I have the Certified Financial Planner (r) credential like co-author Douglas Goldstein and I am a chess lover. It would have been great to have the opportunity to work alongside Susan Polgar to develop a book like this. I am always seeking to find ways to educate clients about financial matters and this one is full of great ideas and examples. A bit repetitive on the financial side but a great job of exploring the basics of financial planning and chess strategy and demonstrating the commonalities. I enjoyed the many references to classic comments by grandmasters and historical games and well as Susan's insights into tournament play. Frankly, I do not know how well this book will resonate with those who have little interest in chess but for me it is a winner. Interesting website to compliment the book as well.

Deserves more than 5 stars

If I could, I would give this book more than 5 stars. It’s chock-full of helpful information, very well written, often entertaining, and exceptionally creative in both format and concept. The similarities between chess strategies and investment strategies are fascinating. Even a rank amateur in both areas can learn a great deal from seeing how the strategies can be applied from one to the other.

Both authors are educators as well as experts in their fields. Indeed, Goldstein says he views himself primarily as a “financial educator”. This quality is eminently apparent in the clear, interesting way he explains the world of investing. No prior knowledge is required to understand what often seems formidably complicated to the inexperienced investor. At the same time, more savvy investors can benefit from the strategic approach he advocates for successful investing.

An especially engaging feature of this book are the quotations from a varied range of people – from Michelangelo and Albert Einstein to Mick Jagger and Yogi Berra, with a smattering of chess grandmasters in between. Wise and often humorous, these quotations are invariably apt and useful in directing the reader to the points about to be made.

The autobiographical touches provided by both authors are not only interesting in themselves but they also contribute to the impression that Douglas Goldstein and Susan Polgar genuinely care about their readers and want them to succeed as strategic players in the worlds of both chess and investing.

Backed up by a well-constructed, user-friendly and vastly informative website, this book is truly a gem.

A pioneering work inviting everybody to compassion, oneness, and peace

This valuable book is a primer, an extended essay, on what neurotheology should be and what principles might guide it. It is also the culmination of all the research and scholarship performed by Dr. Newberg in this field to date.
Ten years ago, when Dr. Newberg together with his mentor Dr. Eugene D'Aquili and Vincent Rause published "Why God Won't Go Away" (NY, Ballantine Books), a new era began for a more comprehensive and modern study of Spirituality, a subject that had been until then for all practical purposes, the monopoly of theologians.
On of the greatest qualities of this book is that it welcomes everybody: Religious and non-religious people, believers, non believers, agnostics and atheists! It is an invitation to work towards Oneness, whether it refers to the oneness that can be found in this Universe or in some other transcendent one or in none at all...
it is a broad ecumenical effort by Dr. Newberg inviting everyone to work towards a general peace that would come from forgiveness, compassion and love.

The too simplified Table of Contents of the book does not makes justice to all the riches that it contains. In order to organize my own study of this pioneering book, I expanded for my own use the original Table of Contents as per the texts, which I present here, to give a more comprehensive idea to interested readers, students and scholars of all that they can expect to find in it.
The book could benefit from some editing, so that the extraordinary cumulus of ideas it presents would be better organized. But that will certainly come in the foreseeable future.

I can only highly recommend this book to all people of good will who are struggling to find a true meaning in
their lives and deeds.

A manifesto

This book was eye opening, this is the first time I heard someone approach mysticism and religious experience from a scientific eager to learn what could be learned without some a priori agenda. This is an outline of a new area of research, with set principles outlining how research and study should be conducted. This could be one of the most exciting topics of the 21st century!

A very useful framework for inquiry

Dr. Newberg presents a well-researched and carefully considered framework for considering questions of the interrelationships between the brain and religion, or neurology and theology. I wouldn't say it's the book is without a priori assumptions. I would say it's without a priori theological assumptions. That absolutely all human experience involves the brain, however, seems to be an assumption for entering the conversation. A single highly functioning anencephalic individual (and there are at least two) would seem to require reconsidering many questions, or resolving not to be inconvenienced by fact. Still, a wonderful introduction to a new field.

Thorough book.

Great book. More thorough than others. It actually has suggestions on how to practice dealing with difficult people. Easy read. Well written. And up to date.

Taming dragons

Some people know exactly how to be difficult; they're the people who bring you down with their negativity, criticism or anger, they refuse to cooperate, they're irritating, frustrating and often infuriating, and if you respond to someone else's difficult behaviour with anger and blame, withdrawal or compliance, you may end up feeling guilty, stressed or depressed, according to Gill Hasson in this book.

After discussing the differences between openly hostile behaviour, disguised hostility and passive behaviour, the author goes on to discuss ways of communicating with difficult people, including:

• Active listening, which minimises the likelihood of communication breakdown
• Minimal encouragers, being sounds and body language which should be used calmly and in a neutral way
• Questions about feelings, with the aim of developing some degree of empathy
• Controlled use of body language
• Using an appropriate degree of assertiveness

All of these actions require you to be able to control your own emotional response, something which is very difficult to do in a situation of open conflict. Moreover, as the author indicates numerous times, you need to be able to develop a high level of self-awareness, so that you can form an objective understanding of the extent to which you might be contributing to the conflict.

The book seems to concentrate on how to deal with difficult relational situations when they arise, rather than preventing such situations in the first place by investing in relationship building. Nonetheless, in my opinion this reasonably short book provides a number of useful suggestions for dealing with the sorts of situations that everyone encounters but most people dread.
