Written in the era of the bookmaker, before pari-mutuel wagering became the norm, there is much here that is now obsolete. However, there is still much that is just as true now as it was then. For example, the condition of a horse, the importance of weight, the importance of the jockey and trainer. No examples given of how Phil actually handicapped a race in the era before speed figures - so don't expect much help there.

The book's primary value is for its historic insight into the thinking of a successful horse-player back in the day.

Interesting informative about history of handicapping development. I was confused there was a hit man with one of the five families named "Pittsburg Phil" I thought he was the same guy as the handicapper. Not so! RIP Pittsburg Phil.

About the Author
Born in Chicago, Tom Trinko has lived a deprived life, never once having butchered a hog. In an attempt to improve the quality of life in Chicago, he pursued his higher education in Pasadena, California, at Cal Tech. He moved to Wisconsin for the better climate and picked up his PhD in physics, graduating with the official title of mad scientist. His first smart move was marrying a woman who worked at Apple and who had an Apple IIe. With that, he was able to extend his professional programming career, which began in 1972, to home computers. His long-suffering wife brought a Mac home in 1984, which marked the start of Tom’s enthusiasm for the only OS for people who want to get work done. He’s ordered the Mac around in Basic, Forth, C, Pascal, and about a billion or so scripting languages. Back when Apple didn’t know any better, he did contract work for Apple’s Developer University. In real life, he works on other platforms, ranging from supercomputers to UNIX workstations, which continually remind him of how spiffy the Mac really is. His current main objective in life is staying more computer literate than his kids.

I didn't learn anything from this book.

By "covering" Excel and Filemaker they mean two short pages.

First line of first example drew syntax error. (2004 edition)

Fanning the pages, the excel example caught my eye and I typed it into script editor and tried to save it to ScriptingAdditions, the default location. It locked me up with a SBOD and a cryptic message about the first line of code. SYNTAX ERROR: A tell can't go after this number. I tried several numbers. Where is Tom to explain? I looked around and could not find him or an explanation. Bad luck. Yup. I think AppleScript for dummies is not for me. Maybe AppleScript is not for me. I'll try another book sometime. Certainly doesn't "save you time" so far.

Even At Times Lame Humor Helps

As a person with rudimentary programming experience (I've taken basic courses in Pascal and C) I'm finding Mr. Trinko's book helpful. The criticism that his injecting bits of humor interferes with learning AppleScript doesn't resonate with me. While not every pun evokes a grin, they take up only a fraction of a second of reading time, and they lighten the task of learning a complex technical skill.

I have no way to judge whether Trinko's approach is poorly organized or not, but the pace of learning and exposure to new topics seems to me smooth and continuous. When he pops in a concept that won't be fully explained until later in the text, he warns the reader. He also reminds the reader where to look back in previous chapters to review a particular idea that has become important again in the discussion.

I find the book a welcome companion. Whether I'll become proficient at AppleScript after having finished it is another matter. I bought this book, assuming that it is a low-level introductory guide, and not a fully fleshed out handbook for developers. I would expect to go on to study more sophisticated presentations that contain expanded reference resources.

Meanwhile, I'm having fun with AppleScript for Dummies.

Dr. Blonna has a bachelor's degree in psychology from William Paterson, a Master's Degree from Seton Hall University in education (specialization in counseling) and an Ed.D from Temple University in Health Education (specialization in health counseling).

Achieve the Sexual Life you Desire

I'm a big fan of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and loved Dr. Blonna's book "Stress Less, Live More." I definitely wanted to read this book, because Dr. Blonna is the first practitioner to apply ACT to our sex lives. In "Sex ACT," Dr. Blonna shows how our minds process sex, plus he offers fascinating exercises such as mutual masturbation and mindful massage.
Who shouldn't buy this book? People looking for instructions on "how to get laid more often" will be disappointed. People who don't care about exploring their minds and emotions won't enjoy this book, and those with profound sexual issues won't gain much from it.
However, "Sex ACT" is a great book for normal, healthy folks who want to enhance their sex lives, deepen their relationships, and have more fun. I especially enjoyed reading the book with my husband and discussing some of the issues. Gay and lesbian sex falls under the umbrella of this book, so no one is left out.

Sex ACT: for Fun and Insights

I've read books by Russ Harris and Steven Hayes, two well known practitioners of acceptance and commitment therapy who recommend Rich Blonna's book. The word "therapy" in the title isn't exactly accurate, because this is not a book for people who need therapy. It's for those of us who are doing okay with our sex lives, but want to do better. Like all ACT books, it's about living life to the fullest and enjoying our relationships.
Blonna writes in a conversational style while describing how our sexual minds work. Some of the material will be more interesting to his fellow therapists, but if you stick with it you'll learn a lot about how we get stuck in unhelful grooves with our sexuality, starting right from childhood. Trying to control everything, including relationships, is one of the most challenging things to give up. I gained some real insights, and the stories and exercises kept me turning the pages.

A Refreshing Look at the History of Marian Devotion

Wendy M. Wright, professor of theology at Creighton University, has previously published numerous works regarding Salesian spirituality and tradition. Her latest publication is a refreshing look at the history of Marian devotion, and the works of art dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels by the past and present pilgrims of Los Angeles. Cardinal Mahony, writing in the Foreword, affirms that Wright's latest work is much more than a Marian art book, or a travelogue meant to appease the whim of its homesick author. Mahony rightfully attests that "Wright places herself in the midst of the mothers of the despised, the sisters who serve the wounded and the weak...who struggle to keep faith and manage to do so...due to the woman whose words are echoed in choirs, pews, prayer books and on the lips of countless millions across the miles and through the years" (vii-viii). Although this volume is replete with wondrous images of Marian statues and stained-glass representations of the Queen Mother, Wright's work will inspire a deeper appreciation of the Theotokos to be found in the reader's own backyard.

Each chapter is centered on a different form of Marian devotion, found within a particular area of the Diocese. In the chapter entitled "Mystical Rose," the reader learns of the Litany of Loreto Windows (St. Ambrose Church, West Hollywood), of which Wright describes: "The lower panels of the Ambrose windows speak of a Mary of cosmic proportions. She is not only the mother of the human Jesus but also the chosen woman whose immaculate conception and assumption mark her as the fully realized human person" (71). Wright later internalizes that Mary, like the Mystical Rose, is the bud that unfurls to receive the divine rays of the sun.

Wright's latest publication is highly recommended, not only for the beautiful Marian images contained therein, but also for the author's concise and poignant writing style. Although this work should appeal to a wide audience, it should be especially appreciated by students of Cultural Anthropology and Marian devotion in modern times.

Not good

I got this book for an online class in Cross-sectional anatomy. Maybe this review is partly my frustration with taking this material online, so take it for what it's worth.

The book is nothing but a dry recital of facts. If you are trying to learn the material forget it. If you already know it, then you might find it nice. I don't.

The text refers to images that are spread throught several pages (and not the page with the text on it). This is very frustrating. Images are labeled in code, this also frustrating. It would take more space, but I think you could concentrate on an image and explain it, then move onto another image.

Caused more frustration than anything

This was the required text for my Sectional Anatomy course, as part of my radiography curriculum. I found the layout of the book disorganized and frustrating. I felt it would have been helpful and appropriate for the text to address the sequencing of CT/MRI images instead of showing a random shot here or there...I suppose that's difficult to do without a multimedia/interactive presentation, but I still had alot of trouble learning via this text. I found the abbreviated captions virtually useless and ill-concieved. It's one thing if you're tyring to quiz yourself and want a hint, but if you're trying to learn from scratch, it would have made much more sense seeing the long-hand terms written out in the columns so we know what we're looking at. Having to glance down at the caption and search for the abbreviation in question proved very distracting to the learning process. And the written text was...well, not enough text. Instead of offering helpful ways to differentiate and remember the many different body parts and structures, the text follows a very robotic "the A bone connects to the B bone which leads to the C artery and supplies the D organ...". I felt overwhelmed with similar-sounding descriptions and didn't take much away from the learning experience that wasn't lost in days. If I already had an understanding of cross-sectional anatomy before using this text, it may have served as a succinct review, but given the fact it is assigned to first-time X-sectional learners I felt it was too abstract and devoid of personality. If I decide to go into CT or MRI in the future, I plan on selling this book and doing a little research on finding the best and most current text available at the time. I can tell this one won't age well.

Tedious reading, poor quality illustrations

Very tedious reading and I've taken Anatomy & Physiology before with other books (e.g., Marieb-Hoehn which I consider superior in many ways, including readability.

The drawings are of poor quality making it difficult to ascertain the locations of the anatomical parts.
