Most treatments of disgust mistakenly interpret it as only an extreme response, thereby neglecting the many subtle ways that it operates aesthetically. This study calls attention to the diversity and depth of its uses, analyzing the emotion in detail and considering the enormous variety of aesthetic forms it can assume in works of art and --unexpectedly-- even in foods.

In the process of articulating a positive role for disgust, this book examines the nature of aesthetic apprehension and argues for the distinctive mode of cognition that disgust affords -- an intimate apprehension of physical mortality. Despite some commonalities attached to the meaning of disgust, this emotion assumes many aesthetic forms: it can be funny, profound, witty, ironic, unsettling, sorrowful, or gross. To demonstrate this diversity, several chapters review examples of disgust as it is aroused by art. The book ends by investigating to what extent disgust can be discovered in art that is also considered beautiful.

Another Gem In A Highly Distinguished Series.. This Chakra Meditation CD is the latest release in a long line of superb therapeutical recordings by clinically trained hypno-expert, Glenn Harrold. I am not entirely au fait with the origins of Chakra but it appears to be a metaphysical gift of the Orient. From what I can glean from this CD's content, Chakras are energy centres found on various parts of the body. Each one has a different colour associated with it and resonates to the sound of a certain musical note. Starting with the base Chakra, you progress up the body stopping at various points along the way to imagine the associated colour and to listen to the relevant note. Highly recommended!

I've used this meditation for going on a dozen years now. When I first started after the unexpected death of my husband, it was difficult to stay focused, but Harrold's voice is so soothing that even when your mind drifts with every day thoughts it draws you back. I can honestly say that this meditation helped me not only through my grief, but also through a transition into loving me. I'm far more tranquil, accepting of myself, and at peace. I know who I am. I still listen to it frequently, and have given it to many friends as a gift to help them through their own struggles. Highly recommended!

My favorite meditation CD

I love this CD, and it has become my current favorite. Yes, Glenn's accent is a bit startling at first, but his voice is friendly and soothing, and I just LOVE the music! I wish he also would put out a CD of just the music (I believe it is his own composition). I love the musical notes sung for each chakra.

The pace is just right, not too fast and not too slow. When I don't have much time, or feel very tired, I use the shorter meditation. The only problem is that it's so relaxing, it's easy to fall asleep during it.

I find it very easy to visualize the chakras with this CD, although I can't say that I "feel" anything when I go from one chakra to the other. However, I feel very relaxed afterwards and my dreams have improved. This is probably due to meditation in general, but I do really like this meditation CD the best, and it encourages me to keep meditating. I like the fact that his visualizations are simple. Some guided meditation CDs are so full of complicated imagery suggestions, it becomes like mental acrobatics -- a bit too much at times. Even though I am a visual person and good at picturing things, I tend to feel mentally tired by all the imagery. Glenn's visualization suggestions are just right, and I like the affirmations and the fact that they repeat, first in one ear and then the other, which I have heard is useful in reaching both sides of the brain. Don't know how true this is, but it feels effective!

Don't let the comments about Glenn's accent deter you from trying this CD. After the first minute or two, he will feel like a comforting friend!

Good voice and good vibes

I prefer a guided meditation to just a musical one, so this cd was a good fit for me. The person's voice was soothing and easy to listen to and what there was of the music/chakra notes was also nice. There were long pauses between speaking parts that let you do you own focusing and mental imagery, which I found helpful. (I don't like to be rushed through images at someone at a fast pace.) I thought there could have been a wee bit more music during some of the "quiet" times, in the pauses between chakras, where the guide was quiet -- it might have helped keep the focus better, at least for me. Also, the very start of the cd, where you are grounding yourself to do the energy work seemed rushed and a bit "throw away" to me. Good grounding is so important for this kind of meditation. However, an easy fix for me is to get myself grounded, and then turn on the meditation and I'm ready to go. So really, the small flaws were minor part of what is a very good, simple, effective meditation cd.

Wonderful Adventure in Nepal in Winter!

This book is a well-written book about trekking around Annapurna in Nepal in the winter. There are some great pictures along with the lively and informative text. This book should appeal to those adventurers who are thinking of trekking here (lots of details as to cost, equipment, etc.), as well as to us arm chair adventurers who just like to read about other people's adventures. This is the third book Tristan has written about trekking in Nepal and I highly recommend all of them. Tristan is a very good writer and makes the subject come alive. At the end of the book there is a link to many more pictures on his blog, which are well worth viewing.

About the Author

Fritz Wagner is a Research Professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington (Seattle). He directs the Northwest Center for Livable Communites and teaches part-time. Before joining UW he was at the University of New Orleans where he founded the College of Urban and Public Affairs and served as its Dean.

Roger Caves is Professor of City Planning, School of Public Affairs, San Diego State University. He received his PhD in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware in 1982. He is co-author of Planning in the USA, 2nd and 3rd editions (Routledge, 2003, 2008), editor of the Encyclopedia of the City (Routledge, 2005), editor of Exploring Urban America, and author of Land Use Planning: The Ballot Box Revolution. His research areas include urban planning, direct democracy, housing, information technologies and community development, and planning for sustainable development.

Don Hahn's name is synonymous with some of the most critically acclaimed animated motion pictures of this generation, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, (the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture (and before the Best Animated Film category was established). He was also the associate producer for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the groundbreaking 1988 film that pioneered new techniques for combining animation and live-action. Don't Think That You're Creative? Well, Don Hahn Knows You Are!

As I sat down to write this review, I ruminated on the advice tendered by Don Hahn. I looked at the blank screen and wondered how to properly express the corporeality of the book as I knock about on my own journey to understand my creativity.

The main thrust of this book is about inspiring creativity in our daily life; the driving force behind recognizing where your creativity wants to be: cooking, painting, blogging, gardening, creating marketing reports, etc. Hahn takes us on a gentle, amusing and thought-provoking path towards a self-enlightenment, of sorts. A self-enlightenment of creativity and where it might reside within us.

To the initiated, it is obvious why Don Hahn is qualified to write a book about creativity. He produced some of the most successful animated films of all time and is considered to be one of the driving forces behind the rebirth of Disney Animation, (To the uninitiated: Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King. Hello!?!)

Hahn's style is very affable and never very sententious. He writes from the heart and it is obvious that he fosters a true desire to help us become a more creative self. The book is replete with anecdotes from the span of Hahn's life. When he paints the picture of his much younger self sneaking a colander to bed to fashion impromptu constellations, you can sense the wonder and trepidation he must have felt. Disney enthusiasts will love the stories Hahn relates about his years in the Disney Animation Studios. We meet legends that mentored him, co-workers that dazzled him (and us) and people that fostered (sometimes unintentionally) his creativity in his youth.

For myself, Hahn's work made me stop and think about how I like to be creative and what strategies might work best for me. I love writing and I seem to work best with a notepad when I gather my thoughts. I can take months to get a good article going as I devour resources and fine tune the project in my mind. I have great ideas in the car, so I carry a voice recorder with me. Hahn never wrote about those specific things, but he does offer admonition about how to find our own creative roots. Even if that is sitting on a beach in Hawaii while eating dark chocolates.

Brain Storm is a book that I recommend to anyone thinking about the creative process, especially if you believe that you don't have a creative bone in your body. Hahn is a natural storyteller and the lessons he imparts flow so much better than an off-the-shelf self-help book. It is a great resource for when you want to take your first steps in finding your personal creativity or if you have lost your way creatively.

Contemplative,reflective, and right on the money, book.

Don Hahn,what can I say? artist-producer-director-and now writer has with his book,Brainstorm Unleashing your Creative self,just, and I really cannot phrase it anymore appropos than he already has with his book title; Simply unleashed a truely dynamic,easy to read humanistic, heartwarming, thoughtful,reflective,and in my own opinion a much needed book in the field of; I hate to be trite with this phrase; Self-help-genre. In addition, it is my own opinion that the reader will find themselves throughout their read; laughing at times,nodding in agreement, and perhaps even shedding a tear at times. All of which I found myself doing. I really cannot remember having read a book such as this that really,and the best way I can describe it is; touched the core of my own humanity and in such a wonderful simplified way. Before I began reading Brainstorm, I thought I was creative, or a creative type so to speak. But this book really had me reflect,and contemplate; And I asked myself; Mark,don't be so jaded in your self-appraisal. There is always room for inner growth and greater creativity. It ain't over till it's over! to use a sometimes common phrase.

In conclusion, Don Hahn has simply iluminated the path toward one's
greater creative expression in this life. A must read for anyone really interested not only in creative expression but; and in my own opinion once again; living a more loving,kind,wondrous, life not only with oneself but amongst all the other wonderful human beings

Great, Inspiring Book

What a breath of fresh air this book has been for me. As someone who considers themselves creative, yet struggles to get in touch with that creativity and advance it every day - this book was so very helpful. Putting yourself out there as creative person can be one of the scariest experiences in life. What if I fail? What if no one likes what I do? What if I suck? What this book has helped me learn is that none of that matters. Put the negative distractions out of your mind and just create. You can't get good if you never start and continue to strive. Thanks Mr. Hahn for the inspiring words and encouragement. Very generous book!

About the Author
Edmund Morris was born and educated in Kenya and went to college in South Africa. He worked as an advertising copywriter in London before immigrating to the United States in 1968. His biography The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt won the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award in 1980. After spending several years as President Reagan's authorized biographer, he published the national bestseller Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan in 1999. He has written extensively on travel and the arts for such publications as "The New Yorker, The New York Times," and "Harper's Magazine," Edmund Morris lives in New York and Washington with his wife and fellow biographer, Sylvia Jukes Morris.

Excellent small farm book!

Essential book for budding farmer! A definite inspiration. Prices have changed but not the work ethic required to succeed. I've read this twice from library, figured I'd better buy it since I'm reading it again.
