Thank You Karen.
By J. Aubrey
When I thumbed to the first page of this book, I was expecting an enjoyable but familiar woman empowerment story. The kind with the premise of a "normal" girl meeting a dashing, sometimes insanely rich, always insanely handsome, guy with abs of steel and heart of gold who sees her inner beauty despite her being just a normal girl. I am using "normal" the way it is used in chic lit fantasies, which usually means Lifetime movie normal. Something two or three notches above real normal. In other words, the heroine looks like a soap opera star, has a job that allows her to travel to fancy places where she meets Mr. Wonderful. If she has kids they are somehow able to take care of themselves or have the understanding babysitter that allows the heroine to go to out whenever and do what needs be done to trap that perfect man. Ms. Normal is never really tired, doesn't worry much about bills, and always finds a reason to get glammed up so she can outshine every other woman in a crowded party, ball, hall, whatever. The "empowerment" comes from trapping a guy not by the heroine growing and coming to terms with her own strength.

All this is thankfully the opposite of what Karen Lenfestey presents. I can go on and on about Bethany being one of the most down-to-earth honest characters I've read in a while, but for me the star of the show is her one night stand, Parker. In a short period of time Parker learns he has serious genetic condition and that it may have been passed on to a 16 year old daughter he never knew he had. How he deals with the consequences of his causal fling is what made this book special to me. It is a rare instances where the man is not just a object to be won, but is an actual feeling being with doubts and worries, hopes and sense of belonging as strong as the heroines. Karen excells at this kind of story telling. Bethany is flawed, Parker is flawed, yet it is their imperfections that draws the readers to their tale. There is not so much a rooting for a happy ending as for a hopeful start because we can believe that these characters can live beyond the pages of this novel and the one to follow.

A beautiful, intriguing, heartfelt novel
By Jon Anthony Hauser
As I read The Weekend Getaway, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself involved in far more than just a story about other people’s problems, challenges, and lives. At times, along with being swept up in the story, I found myself lost in nostalgia. Right from the start images and memories from my own college years flooded through my mind, and I was instantly able to relate to the characters and the story as though I’d known them during that formative time in my life. But while there certainly were moments given to my own bittersweet memories, it was Karen’s story that kept me turning the pages.

Throughout The Weekend Getaway, Ms. Lenfesty gives excellent insights into the qualities, flaws, and motives of all her characters. They are human and believable, and the situations they confront are familiar to us all in some way or another. I found myself often liking them, sometimes sympathetic to them, occasionally admiring them, and even disliking a couple of them when they deserved it. It is no different in the real world, right? Just as we all do sooner or later, these people live with the consequences of choices made years earlier, and do their best to live with them. This story recalls for us the reality that we cannot run from the past forever. However, through her primary character Beth, Karen illustrates for all of us the value of self-worth and self-forgiveness.

In this story, Ms. Lenfesty does an excellent job of foreshadowing Beth’s discontent with her life, and the obstacles that will be put in her path. We learn that she has not always made the right choices, but she is determined to face them, even if belatedly. We also learn that for most of her life she has been dealt a difficult hand to play, and so I couldn’t help but rooting for her. Beth spends years patiently doing her best to shoulder alone the burdens that others have left her with, even when the cost seemed more than she could bear. This novel is about coming to terms with those costs, and getting on with life. It’s also about doing the right thing, no matter how difficult, even if it seems too late. If you do, the surprise just might be that you get back more than you give up.

For anyone who’s ever had high hopes and expectations, only to have them dashed, there are lessons to be learned in this story. It is how we pick up the pieces and move on that determines the final course of our lives. But there is far more here than a life lesson to be gained. Karen Lenfesty has a way of taking the routine trials of everyday life and making them relevant to the overarching themes of our lives. She does not need car chases, explosions, or salaciousness to hold the attention of her audience, or to point out that it’s how we live our lives in little ways that determines how we will live them when the big things present themselves. It’s a beautiful, intriguing, heartfelt novel.

A love/hate relationship
By J.S. White
The first half of this book, I hated it. I thought the storyline was so far fetched that I had to make myself continue reading the book. The next 1/4 of the book I wanted to see what happened to Bethany and Parker. The last 1/4 of the book, I couldn't put it down and considered reading the next in the series. I still think the storyline was a little unbelievable but I fell in love with the characters. I have 4 or 5 books on my Kindle to read now but I may come back to this author and read some more of hers.
