The books arrived well packaged and on time. The books however were a little smaller than what I anticipated since the last time I reviewed these same books was at a local library, but nevertheless I was impressed that the books did come in a compacted design. For what better way to show off the design tool called the Modulor by placeing a picture of it on it's very own jacket that comes with the books. You feel as if the whole box set is some sort of handy carpenters tape measure to carry 'round with you.The inside of the book is full of explanatory remarks about perfecting, creating and applying this human scale ruler which incorporates the practical use of what is termed the Golden Section and thereby adhereing it to his/your own building designs. For those of you who are avid Golden Ratio/Section seekers these two books are a great gift idea and a great collectors item.The books also include many letters too from his colleagues who critique and sometimes try to disprove his modular idea, that it really works.I have included pictures to show you the overall appearance of both books and its smart jacket design. Therefore I say an excellant choice and would recommend to college students, Architects, and all those versed in the Arts in general

Le Corbusier fans and students know the couragous contributions this great architect gave the world. Le Modulor is the tool with which he created his great works and belived that this tool is accessable to all. A tool that assists the designer to ensure proportion is always (if not most of the time) correct, true, and beautiful. Le Modular addresses the philosophy behind the tool and discusses the usablity of the tool.

Another excellent book is "Geometry of Design: Studies in Proportion and Composition" by Kimberly Elam. It is short on words, adequate on images, and terrific at explaining in an elemental way the use of proportioning tools.

Le Corbusier had been working for some time on his Modulor system using these French decimal measurements but without much success. Then one of his collaborators, Py, said: "Isn't the height we are working with rather a French height? Have you ever noticed that in English detective novels the hero is always six feet tall?" Le Corbusier continues: " We then applied this standard. To our delight, the graduations of a new Modulor, based on a man six feet tall, translated themselves into round figures in feet and inches". (hardly surprising when you consider that this is a natural system of measure.).

A Wonderful Introduction to Your Toddler's World

This is my 18-month old's favorite book. I had to order a second copy because she looks at it constantly! Although it is written in Spanish, I use it in English. I've yet to find another picture dictionary type book in English with such clear and colorful pictures. Objects are introduced in the context of a scene around the home such as the kitchen, backyard, a birthday party, getting dressed, etc. Each object is labeled in Spanish. My daughter loves to point to the familiar objects, and I believe that this book has helped her acquire a great deal of language more quickly than she would have acquired without it. She loves to look at all types of books, but she always comes back to this one. As I said, the pictures are clear and not at all overwhelming or crowded together. Furthermore, their relative sizes are presented correctly and realistically, unlike many of the other picture dictionaries I've seen, which show many pictures on the same page drawn to an incorrect scale.

Highly recommended for young learners of Spanish

This book is beautifully put together. It presents words children want and need to know in a context they can understand. The illustrations are clear, bright and interesting. Any child who is learning Spanish, whether as a first or second language, should have a copy of this book. It is a tremendous resource, and I feel fortunate to have it available in my elementary school classroom.

My Toddler's Favorite Book

I am an English speaker who happens to love Spanish. One of my dear friends, a Spanish speaker, let me borrow her very-well-loved copy of this book and my 9-month-old daughter fell in love with it. So did I. What I love:

- Beautiful, real-to-life illustrations that clearly depict the objects, emotions, or actions
- Excellent choice and range of vocabulary common to a child's everyday experience
- Favorite items are frequently woven into multiple pages (Almost every page has either a teddy bear, cat, or dog in some sort of situation: a girl at the park is pushing teddy in a doll carriage, the dog is eying a squirrel in the backyard, the cat is pawing party favors at the birthday party, and so on). My toddler loves playing "I spy" just to find these three things.
- Excellent choices for less common vocabulary: an entire page for musical instruments, a holiday page with vocabulary specific to each day, etc.
- Plenty of recurring objects in various contexts, many of which are labelled again on new pages (El camion is shown on one page as a toy dump truck, on another as a fire truck. On the Vehiculos page, it shows a semi carrying giraffes. At first, I thought camion meant "toy" or "dump truck", but upon later readings I realized it must mean just "truck")
- Words are generally well-placed relative to what they're describing (corriendo, for example, is placed in such a way that it's clearly showing the running boy rather than the girl on the seesaw), which makes it easier for non-Spanish speakers to pick up on the meaning.

My own Spanish vocabulary has dramatically expanded upon studying this book; I'm sure it's doing the same for my daughter.

Written in the era of the bookmaker, before pari-mutuel wagering became the norm, there is much here that is now obsolete. However, there is still much that is just as true now as it was then. For example, the condition of a horse, the importance of weight, the importance of the jockey and trainer. No examples given of how Phil actually handicapped a race in the era before speed figures - so don't expect much help there.

The book's primary value is for its historic insight into the thinking of a successful horse-player back in the day.
