Review
“The preppers' bible.”—Jim Forsyth, The Chicago Tribune

“Civilization is still standing now, but that does not mean it always will… We'd better know what to do in the event of a deadly viral pandemic, major asteroid strike, unprecedented hyperinflationary (or deflationary) economic depression, third World War, or any other global disaster, Rawles argues. He spells out all the hazards that we might face in a post-disaster society: looting, armed violence, food shortages, etc. Then he lays out steps we can take now, such as taking survival- training courses, designing shelters, and stocking them with necessary supplies. He even offers a chapter on disaster-proof financial security: savvy investments to make now, earning income in the midst of a major recession, and bartering in the wake of a true disaster.”—The Futurist

Introduction

An Extremely Fragile Society

We live in a time of relative prosperity. Our health care is excellent, our grocery-store shelves bulge with a huge assortment of fresh foods, and our telecommunications systems are lightning fast. We have cheap transportation, with our cities linked by an elaborate and fairly well-maintained system of roads, freeways, rails, canals, seaports, and airports. For the first time in human history, the majority of the world’s population now lives in cities.

But the downside to all this abundance is overcomplexity, overspecialization, and overly long supply chains. In the First World, less than 2 percent of the population is engaged in agriculture or fishing. Ponder that for a moment: Just 2 percent of us are feeding the other 98 percent. The food on our tables often comes from hundreds if not thousands of miles away. Our heating and lighting are typically provided by power sources hundreds of miles away. For many people, even their tap water travels that far. Our factories produce sophisticated cars and electronics that have subcomponents that are sourced from three continents. The average American comes home from work each day to find that his refrigerator is well-stocked with food, his lights come on reliably, his telephone works, his tap gushes pure water, his toilet flushes, his paycheck has been automatically deposited to his bank, his garbage has been collected, his house is a comfortable seventy degrees, his televised entertainment is up and running 24/7, and his Internet connection is rock solid. We’ve built a very Big Machine that up until now has worked remarkably well, with just a few glitches. But that may not always be the case. As Napoleon found the hard way, long chains of supply and communication are fragile and vulnerable. Someday the Big Machine may grind to a halt.

Let me describe just one set of circumstances that could cause that to happen:

Imagine the greatest of all influenza pandemics, spread by casual contact—a virus so virulent that it kills more than half of the people infected. And imagine the advance of a disease so rapid that it makes its way around the globe in less than a week. (Isn’t modern jet air travel grand?) Consider that we have global news media that is so rabid for “hot” news that they can’t resist showing pictures of men in respirators, rubber gloves, goggles, and Tyvek coveralls wheeling gurneys out of houses, laden with body bags. These scenes will be repeated so many times that the majority of citizens decides “I’m not going to go to work tomorrow, or the day after, or in fact until after things get better.” But by not going to work, some important cogs will be missing from the Big Machine.

What will happen when the Big Machine is missing pieces? Orders won’t get processed at the Wal-Mart distribution center. The 18-wheelers won’t make deliveries to groceries stores. Gas stations will run out of fuel. Some policemen and firemen won’t show up for work, having decided that protecting their own families is their top priority. Power lines will get knocked down in windstorms, and there will be nobody to repair them. Crops will rot in the fields and orchards because there will be nobody to pick them, or transport them, or magically bake them into Pop-Tarts, or stock them on your supermarket shelf. The Big Machine will be broken.

Does this sound scary? Sure it does, and it should. The implications are huge. But it gets worse: The average suburban family has only about a week’s worth of food in their pantry. Let’s say the pandemic continues for weeks or months on end—what will they do when that food is gone and there is no reasonably immediate prospect of resupply? Supermarket shelves will be stripped bare. Faced with the prospect of staying home and starving or going out to meet Mr. Influenza, millions of Joe Americans will be forced to go out and “forage” for food. The first likely targets will be restaurants, stores, and food-distribution warehouses. As the crisis deepens, not a few “foragers” will soon transition to full-scale looting, taking the little that their neighbors have left. Next, they’ll move on to farms that are in close proximity to cities. A few looters will form gangs that will be highly mobile and well armed, ranging deeper and deeper into farmlands, running their vehicles on surreptitiously siphoned gasoline. Eventually their luck will run out and they will all die of the flu, or of lead poisoning. But before the looters are all dead they will do a tremendous amount of damage. You must be ready for a coming crisis. Your life and the lives of your loved ones will depend on it.

The New World and You

If and when the flu pandemic—or terrorist attack, or massive currency devaluation, or some other unthinkable crisis—occurs, things could turn very, very ugly all over the globe. Think through all of the implications of disruption of key portions of our modern technological infrastructure. You need to be able to provide water, food, heating, and lighting for your family. Ditto for law enforcement, since odds are that a pandemic will be YOYO (You’re on your own!) time.

You’ll need to get your beans, bullets, and Band-Aids squared away, pronto. Most important, you’ll need to be prepared to hunker down for three or four months, with minimal outside contact. That will take a lot of logistics, as well as plenty of cash on hand to pay your bills in the absence of a continuing income stream.

The Great Unraveling

As this book goes to press in the summer of 2009, we are witnessing a global economy in deep, deep trouble. Artificially low interest rates and artificially high residential real estate prices in many First World nations fueled a worldwide credit bubble. That bubble burst in 2007, and the full effects of the credit collapse are just now being felt. The resulting recession might turn into an economic depression that could last more than a decade.

The collapse of the credit default swaps (CDS) casino is indicative of much larger systemic risk. These exotic hedges are just one small part of the more than six-hundred-trillion-dollar global derivatives market. There are other derivatives that are just as dangerous. Veteran investor Warren Buffett called derivatives “a ticking time bomb.” I concur.

All of the recent bad economic news and the advent of the H1N1 flu call into question some of the basic assumptions about living in a modern industrialized society. We are forced to ask ourselves: How much stress can a society take before it begins to unravel? How safe will our cities be in another year, or in five years? Will supermarket shelves continue to be well stocked with such a tremendous abundance and such a wide assortment of goods?

With the information contained in this book, you can prepare yourself to live independently (“off the grid”) for an extended period of time. Self-sufficiency is the bottom line.

Overall it's pretty OK
By adp113
I have followed Rawles blog and his writings. This book is pretty OK, and here is why. The book does provoke a lot of thought, but.. Here is where it misses. The situation that Rawles describes, he has not lived through. I still have a rather normal life I have to live and for most of us, ditching it all and moving to the mountains is not a feasible option. He often cites needing a years worth of anything on hand, but what happens after that year? Do you really want to live in a place of constant death and destruction. He lists a lot of doomsday scenarios by where the ones who survive will not be the lucky ones.

I think the much more likely future is similar to what happened in Argentina or what has been slowly happening in South Africa.

So while next spring I will be tilling up a good part of yard for a garden, harvesting rain water, and buying and stocking in bulk. I will not be buying a GOOD location or a buying an old diesel junker truck to get there.

There is a lot you can learn from this book, but don't make it your sole reference. Where you live determines your survival strategy, there is no one size fits all approach.

Not bad, but misses the boat
By Alberto Vargas
Rawles is a great non-fiction writer, and this is a well written book. However, it has some major faults:

- The book is for hard core survivalists only. It assumes complete and absolute break down of civilization. It does not deal with "simpler" short-term emergencies (tornado, fire, flood) that you can ride out living in your normal urban or suburban environment. The book is practically all about establishing a well-stocked remote rural retreat, which you defend tooth-and-nail against looters and invaders, while keeping the curtains down not to let them see your window lights.

- Rawles preaches to the choir, not to the uninitiated. If you are not familiar with the survivalist vernacular and have not read similar books / blogs, you will find this book a little jarring and over your head. In fact, Rawles often cross-references his fiction novel Patriots as supplementary guide. Speaking of preaching to the choir: all these five stars reviews which are highly rated as helpful - feel free to ignore the ones written before October 2. Given that this book started shipping on the last day of September and is not available for Kindle, there is simply no way people could have received and read the book before Friday October 2. Rawles is known for encouraging his blog readers to all buy the book on the same day to create a "bestseller" effect on Amazon, and this carries over to the reviews. So beware.

- Book is way too tiny and short for much useful learning. In fact, each chapter is basically a thoughtful intro followed by a list of items to get, with some quick facts (e.g. how long honey or wheat can be stored, where to buy the containers, etc). There is barely any attempt to teach survival attitude and skills - those are farmed out to other books or training courses. To the author's credit, he has plenty of great pointers to other books and courses. However, you are much better off going there in the first place.

- Rawles has a misanthropic, dog-eat-dog sense to his writing, both in this book and in Patriots. It is too much about hunkering down in your darkened bunker, eating MREs, and using plenty of ammo to keep the less fortunate souls away. While it is possible that a major event could end civilization as we know it, I do wish Rawles had a more positive tone and attitude, at least when trying to covert newcomers to his cause :)

There is one really big issue with hard core survivalism in general. If a truly massive global or nationwide disaster comes to pass, the likelihood of surviving it is low, no matter how well you prepare. Surviving a nuclear war or a mass epidemic is unlikely, and more about random chance than preparation. The survivors are bound to come together in sizable groups for strength and protection. If a well armed gang or ex-military unit converges on one of the Rawles-style rural retreats, game is over. So at the end of the day, at least to me, hard-core survivalism comes across as a militaristic make-believe game, mostly indulged by paranoid guys. Last but not least, unlike "soft-core" temporary disaster survival, what Rawles recommends is expensive and requires major lifestyle changes, which limits its appeal tremendously.

So, what's good about this book? The chapters on food storage and vehicles stand out. Also, if you are looking for a primer on surviving a major end-of-civilization disaster, this is a great starting point. To the author's credit, his survival blog has more readers than most daily newspapers, so he knows his stuff, whether you agree with him or not.

Interesting, but niche appeal
By Gnome
I purchased this book with an open mind. I can say that my purchase was motivated mostly out of respect to the author for his previous work and his blog. I tried to read this book with the only expectation that I would walk away from it with one or two pieces of useful knowledge more than what I started with. At the end of the day, I felt slightly cheated. Let me list some of the biggest flaws with this work so people can be aware of what they need to address if they are looking at this as a resource material.

1. I am really not sure who is the real audience for this book. After finishing it last night, I concluded that most of the 5 star WOW feedback did NOT read the book before they posted their reviews. I guess if you live on 20 acres in the country 5 miles away from your closest neighbor then a lot of the over view sections in this book are for you.
2. The book is written with a very pessimistic tone that leaves the reader with a sense of helplessness if he lives with in a city or greater metropolitan area. I live in a city and because of my job I am unable to leave for the country. I think this was the greatest mental hurdle when confronted with this work. If you are unable to commit to a change of location and life style, then reading this book almost feels like a waste of time. Tell me something I can use for city survival as my home, family, job and life have all taken place inside of a society.
3. Lots of the specific reference areas into subjects that are of great interest (canning, strengthening the defenses of your home, essential home gardening on less than an acre, and the firearms questions) differ to other works by name only. I was rather upset with the feeling that I had just read a survival appendix when many of the real questions I had were just glossed over and left me confused. I know that the author has a lot of knowledge in this realm, but seems to only reference it to his consulting business or divert questions to other authors.
4. The feeling of "missing the boat" or helplessness which the author brings into his pessimistic conclusions. If you have not already built a stronghold out in the country at the top of your mountain with an independent water supply 5 years ago, then you are probably boned. Good luck!

These are my own thoughts and conclusions based on this work purely for its standalone value. I still have a lot of confidence and respect in and for the author based on his previous work. I just wish he would have given us more. I am still giving him a slightly positive review '

The Test: My Autobiography, by Brian O'Driscoll

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Test, the stunning autobiography from rugby legend Brian O'Driscoll, read by Aidan Kelly.

Between 1999, when he made his international debut, and his retirement in 2014, there was no greater player in world rugby than Brian O'Driscoll.

In 2010 Rugby World magazine named him its world player of the decade - and since then the legend has only grown. Along the way he was tested - by personal loss, off-the-field pressures, and career-threatening injuries.

The Test is a book about how he took on those challenges - how a world-class talent developed a world-class work ethic and temperament. As he lost his youthful pace, O'Driscoll's reinvented himself as a player, revealing the remarkable character and drive behind the glittering gifts. In the latter years of his career, he put in a sequence of gladiatorial performances that etched themselves into the minds of every rugby fan every bit as indelibly as the legendary early tries in Paris and Brisbane.

Honest, gritty, and thoughtful, The Test is not just an essential sports book. It is an essential book about family, friends, hard work, courage, and imagination.

An Easy Test
By JohnCarr
I assume that the vast majority of potential readers of “The Test” will know who Brian O’Driscoll is and what he achieved. If you don’t he’s simply one of the greatest ruby players who ever lived.
He begins with an account of his last game for Leinster, the victory in the 2014 Pro12 Grand Final where he had to go off early after injury. He then goes back to his childhood and works forward in chronological fashion to what I suspect was for him his “real” last game, the win for Ireland in France to seal the Six Nations Championship.
For most of the book I thought that the play that would receive most analysis was his account of how he engineered his first meeting with his future wife but as he recounts in vivid detail those final few minutes in Paris as we – I’m Irish – hung on for dear life it was like being in front of the TV with the outcome still in doubt.
A recurring criticism amongst who have given the book a low rating is that it is boring, that it lacks revelations or recriminations.
Well, may I ask what you expected to see in a Brian O’Driscoll autobiography? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically...?
It’s a bit like criticising a vegetarian cookbook for its lack of meat recipes.
What controversies are there to cover? Him being on the receiving end of that spear tackle? Him being dropped for the one and only time in a 15 year career? An opposing team’s ineffectually cheating in “Bloodgate”? The treatment he received at the hands of England in the Grand Slam year? (I was at that match and how he picked himself up time and again I do not know). He covers them all with the class we’ve rightly come to expect of him.
This is a guy with an extraordinary talent who comes from a good family, who married the only girlfriend he ever lived with, who never changed clubs and who never seems to have had a major falling out with a coach or teammate.
The two main revelations in the book are non-rugby related, how he was affected by the unexplained suicide of a close friend and how he spent a night in custody in New York when, needless to say, he’d done nothing wrong.
The book has an index that comes in handy and avoids the need for a glossary of nicknames with such entries as “’Dreamboat’ see Kearney, Dave”.
How to rate the book? Unlike the man himself it’s no five star masterpiece. Through no fault of his own his life lacks “Sturm und Drang”. If I’d no interest in rugby but had been asked to review the book I’d have given it a three. But for fifteen years I, like millions of others, had the pleasure of watching a sporting genius with the heart of a lion, a nice guy who finished first more often than not but who, whether he met with triumph or disaster, treated those two imposters just the same.

Champion
By Pauline Cunningham
A thoroughly good read which shows Brian in his true form... a dedicated, determined, tough, selfless team player who has given new meaning to the word legend. It has been an honour to watch him with Leinster, Ireland and The Lions and to have witnessed his undisputed and unmatched skills over the years. In this book he details many of his major and some minor matches. He was a worldclass captain admired and feared in equal measure on match day by his opponents and whilst some did their best or should I say their worst to take him out of the game he doesn't badmouth or rant over these incidents. He comes across as very decent, unassuming and respectful...a true example to every young person starting out in life....sporting or otherwise ......Pauline (Cavan)

The bible of sports gambling
By Elihu Feustel
Stanford Wong wrote the single best volume for the beginner to intermediate sports bettor (with an emphasis on football). The book teaches the basics of sportsbetting, terminology, understanding odds, and methods to make bets that should win in the long-term. This is an excellent primer on someone who is serious about making money from sports.

The material is slightly dated - internet betting has made the sports markets more efficient. Notwithstanding this, most of the material is still useful (notable exceptions are trends of super bowl teams, and some underdog analysis).

There is a recurring emphasis on mathematics, which any solid gambling book should have. Additionally, the book has several charts that are invaluable to sports bettors. It has frequences of pushes for NFL against different spreads, as well as different totals (these have not changed significantly since the book was published). Additionally, it has odds charts for Poisson distributions for 1 and 2 variables. While an advanced gambler could generate all these charts themselves, this book still saves the newer gamblers many hours - and the book is worth it for these alone.

If you are serious about gambling to win (which means you are willing to put in long hours, and are very disciplined), there are a few other books you might consider: any of Stanford Wong's Blackjack Books; Larry Seidel's "Investing in College Basketball" and Don Pesynski's "Win more-- lose less!".

Sharp Sports Betting
By A Customer
I really found this book to be boring. I would recommend this book to a person who does not know anything about sports betting. This book is not for experts. To much basic stuff, like what straight bets, parleys, teasers, ect are. Three quarters of the book explains betting terms. The only one good thing I got from this book is the charts in chapter 13. I found these win loss charts against the spread to be great information. Everything else was weak. Do not buy this book if you are looking for ways to win. I could write a book that would help you do a lot better in handicapping then this book will. There are some great points in this book, but those great points come from other authors. The author gets most of his information from a certain website, so I guess you pay to find that sites name.

Take away the charts, this book is almost useless. Not impressed with it at all. For beginnners with less than 1 year of wagering experience only.

Reasons to buy this book
By Steven L.
If you kid love rescue bots then they are going to love this book. It has 5 stories in 1 book, which makes it convenient for my son to bring it with him when we go out, instead of lugging a few separate books to keep him entertained. The stories are easy for him to follow and at the beginning of each story there are lesson words to look out for to develop his reading skills. A great buy!

Pro: Cheap, stories are kid friendly, promotes reading
Cons: None

Good Value; Good Book to Try
By Pop Bop
The Rescue Bots are four Transformers, (Chase, Heatwave, Boulder and Blades), who have been tasked by Optimus Prime to serve and protect humans. They are, respectively, a police bot, a fire bot, a construction bot, and a copter bot. This book is a collection of six stand alone books - one for each Transformer, one for Optimus Prime, (who is Optimus Primal when in T. Rex dinosaur mode), and a sixth book that lines all of the characters up in a Rescue Bots origin story.

All I remembered about this whole world was that Transformers transformed from one thing into another, that some became dinosaurs, and that Optimus Prime was a good guy. Oh, and I knew that every kid in my family wanted Transformer toys for birthdays and holidays. (And I go all of the way back to when this first started in 1984. Fun fact, back then a couple of the bad guys transformed into micro-cassettes and one transformed into a cassette recorder. Ahh, memories.) Anyway, this book will help get you oriented if you're new to Transformers and will serve as a fine readable introduction to Transformers for young kids. (It really is six books bound together into one book. Paper is heavy, color is excellent, and the price is a fraction of what the six stand alones would cost.)

That said, is it worth reading? Well, this is very basic stuff. It seemed pre-chapter book to me, with only two to three very brief sentences per page. It's Level One in the Little, Brown and Company "Passport to Reading" system, which means short words in simple sentence structures. And that's what you get.

The interest level is high; the drawings are cartoonish, but colorful and clear. The action is on a put-out-the-fire-and-catch-a-dino level. Heroes are heroes, and there isn't any ironic detachment or sub-text. This is straight up action-packed hero stuff.

The book struck me as a great way to test the waters with regard to a youngster's inclination to start reading, his interest in hero/adventure fiction, and her interest in the whole Transformers phenomenon. Even if Transformers don't end up being your reader's favorite, the book is fine as a more general trial balloon and it certainly aims to grab young readers.

I was generally satisfied with the book and so would suggest it as a legit candidate for a first reader.

My kids love this book
By Bennett
My kids love this book. It is basically a re-write of some of the episodes from TV. It includes all their favorite characters. It is simple enough for early readers. If your kids aren't already familiar with the Rescuebot world this might not be as interesting. I withheld a star because there isn't any new original content. Daddy get's tired of reading the same old stories over and over.

Good read for those new to People and Operations Management and setting up Operations in India
By Emmy B. Gengler
In recent years I have read a number of books about offshoring, outsourcing, offshoring to specific geographical locations, etc. Offshoring Secrets falls in to the latter category, with the emphasis on setting up operations in India. This is the first book that I have read where the author specifically states that one of the primary targets for the books are Indian's (and others outside of India) who are tasked with setting up Indian operations for multinationals or other firms coming in to India. There are probably other books out there, but I have just not read them yet.

Keeping the intended targets in mind I set out to see if anyone involved with outsourcing could learn from this book and how much a person would learn concretely about setting up operations in India.

To start off in the Preface of the book, the author lists the types of questions which can be answered by reading this book, questions such as: "My manager has asked me to setup an India center to save costs, but I am not achieving any remarkable savings within the stipulated timeframe. What am I doing wrong?" I like the structure of all of the questions and most of the questions that are listed are very specific rather than general. But as I went through the nine questions that this book is supposed to answer, I found myself putting them in to two categories; 1 - Those that would apply to any project any where and 2 - those that would apply to any offshore location. Out of the nine questions I put 3 in the any project category and 6 in the any location (or country) category.

I found more specifics that can be applied to any offshore location, with a few specifics for India only, such as the following:

* The section on choosing the location of the facility; - the smaller your operations will be, the better it is to be located in the city center or to have a central location so that the average commute time is less, thus giving an advantage in hiring. Where as larger operations can be located outside the city since larger operations can afford to finance transportation for their staff to help people get to/from work. This is true in many other offshore locations as well.

* The formation of the support team is also relevant irregardless of which offshore country, as is choosing the right work to start with, both of these areas are critical to the success of any offshore venture, with which I wholeheartedly agree.

* No one will disagree that India certainly has some nuances currently with recruitment; receiving 1000 to 10000+ resumes from a single advertisement certainly does not happen every where, but the ideas of how to and where to source can be applied in almost any offshore location. Different types of interview processes described, are standard interview processes used most everywhere (in the west as well, so this is relevant just to those new to the hiring process and how to conduct it).

* Chapter 5 is dedicated to culture. Some of the issues discussed can be seen in other offshore locations, such as the issues of sharing salary information and benefits. The fact that people join companies for social reasons as well as for salary, etc., is also not associated only with India. The fact that it is a culture which values "seniority" to the extent that it does is probably more unique to India than other offshore locations, but can be seen to some extent in other offshore locations as well. The description of India as a "Difficult to say No" culture, is also one of those traits more unique to India than other locations, but also can be seen to some extent in other offshore locations as well.

* Issues of how the parent company deals with the offshore company or the team in India, this can be true irregardless of the offshore location. The discussion is useful since it gives suggestions on how to mitigate these issues.

* The chapter on People Management, chapter 6, I did not find unique, most of the discussion dealt with issues that one would have to deal with anywhere, so this chapter is most relevant for the new manager.

Chapter 7 brought up something which I thought was a bit ironic for a book about offshoring and therefore about distributed work. A situation was described around what to do to make the execution of work successful. Per the author's suggestion, the development team and the test departments should be co-located together in an open environment in order to facilitate interaction; otherwise there could be problems between the two groups. Well most likely for any manager anywhere, who is reading this book and is charged with setting up facilities, this would be an ideal situation. But most managers are also realists and the nature of offshoring and outsourcing work tends to mean you work with distributed teams. In many instances the testing team may be located in one country and the development team in another and the testing department just may motivate themselves by sending an email to everyone in all teams talking about a big bug they just found right before the "go live" date. This may be seen as de-motivating or like the test department is rubbing it in their faces, to the development team, but this situation may occur and it just may be out of your hands if you are the manager of the development team. You can only worry about your team and how to keep them motivated and you have to be able to deal with these situations that arise in distributed teams. If you can't deal with these situations then it is reminiscent of the reasons for not offshoring such as; "we can't offshore software development, we need everyone in the same location", and this is obviously not true. So any new manager reading this book will have to be able to deal with the fact that they may not have a choice as to having the test and development teams co-located, and they may just have to learn to deal with it in this global world.

For both Indians and others reading this book, it is good to keep in mind that many of the specifics which are talked about; details to look for in rental agreements or what type of legal documents you will need to establish the Indian entity, can be expected to change in India as laws change. As in most of the developing countries, laws change rapidly; exact documents needed change frequently, etc., that is just to be expected.

If you are Indian or from another country and you would like to eventually be able to set up operations for a foreign firm in India, and you are new to the outsourcing industry and all of the administrative and people management issues, this book is a must read. If you are an experienced Indian manager or an experienced manager from another country and you are charged with setting operations for your company in India; chapters 3, 4, and 5 will most likely still be interesting for you. If you are a new manager and you are going to be managing for the first time, a team for a foreign firm in India or in another offshore location, you will find parts of chapter 4 and 5 relevant and chapters 6 and 7 (which will help in dealing with the parent company and in setting up the projects for success) relevant.

Thumbnail sketch of challenges faced by global companies when they try to build and administer a successful offshore operation.
By Jeff Lippincott
This book was just OK (3 stars). I didn't particularly like (4 stars) it. And I certainly didn't love (5 stars) it. This book covers a special kind of project management: offshoring. Global companies (parent companies headquartered in a country other than India) have started openning operations in India (offshore counterparts) with hopes of saving labor costs when providing their services and manufacturing their products.

The author has significant experience openning and running offshore operations for various global companies. He has worked in India, Germany, and the US. His background has been as an IT professional. And he has written the instant book or booklet (it is only 100 or so small pages long) covering the issues he has found to be important when doing his work.

The problems that arise when leading and managing an offshore project depend on whether the leader of the project is a foreigner or a native to India. They depend on whether the leader has technical skills and/or management skills. They depend on whether she has knowledge of the culture in India. And they depend on whether she has knowledge of India itself (cities, regions, states, or whatever). Nobody is good at all of these things. And this book covers in general terms how people with a different mix of these traits perform as project managers when leading an offshoring project.

I hate to say this, but the writing of this booklet hit me as if it had been written using the native language of India and translated using a computer program that could translate it to English. Clearly someone had edited it after the computer translated it, but it still just did not flow for me as I read it.

In my humble opinion, this book could easily have been a 350-page tome of larger pages if it had been better outlined, developed, and written. The quality of the writing does not surprise me. Techies are not known for their writing and communications skills. I must give the author credit, though. By writing this book he has prepared the first draft of a future revised edition that could be a really good book. And I suspect he will eventually write that book. The author was clearly trying to be helpful in giving us the instant book. And I do feel bad not being able to rate it higher than the star rating I gave it.

The topics included in this book involve: (1) project management, (2) leadership, (3) people skills, (4) communication skills, (5) strategic planning, and (6) understanding cross cultures. And there are many books written about all six of these topics. So why was this book only 100 pages? And why was this 100-page book worth the $19.95 price tag? I didn't see any groundbreaking information provided here. 3 stars!

The hard work of establishing your company offshore in India...
By Thomas Duff
Utkarsh Rai, the author of Offshoring Secrets: Building and Running a Successful India Operation, contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing this title. Being that I'm in the Information Technology field (which experiences its fair share of offshoring), I thought it would be a good look to see what's really involved in that process. Rai uses his first-hand knowledge of the subject to share the perils and pitfalls that one must account for when trying to start up an operation in India.

Contents:
A Brief History; Choosing the Right Leader; Setting up the Operation; Recruitment Challenges; Culture & Policies; People Management; Execution is Everything; Conclusion; Terms and Terminology; List of Vendors; Policies to Address; Solutions to Case Studies; About the Author

The offshoring that is discussed in this book is more in line with your company wanting to actually establish a presence in India. It's not so much for the company that is outsourcing part of their process with an offshore firm. But in either case, you'll be exposed to the reality of the situation when it comes to reducing costs by offshoring. Since so many companies are moving or establishing operations in India, the pressure to pay higher wages to recruit the top talent is very real. Therefore, it's not *as cheap* to hire an Indian workforce as it may have been a few years back. Yes, it's still cheaper than American wages, but the gap is getting smaller. On top of trying to hire good talent in a hot job market, you also have to account for cultural, legal, and time zone differences. The time gap means that one side or the other is going to have to be available at some inconvenient hours for meetings. Tax and regulations are also quite different, so you'll need to make sure you have local resources to guide you through that process. And of course, treating a foreign workforce as though they were brought up with American culture and values is a sure way to alienate everyone quickly. By the time all these things are taken into account, the hype about massive savings with offshoring operations becomes less rosy, and you realize that it'll take time, money, and a lot of effort to realize those benefits.

It doesn't take a lot of time to read through this short volume, and you'll take away a realistic look at what makes up the success and failure of an offshore operation. The net result is that you'll be able to estimate the true costs and value of taking that route.

Iron Tigers, by Michael Farmer

From the bestselling author of Tin Soldiers torn from tomorrow's headlines-a cutting edge novel of a new World War.

In the wake of the second Gulf War comes the revelation of shifting alliances in the Middle East. In Iraq, a stable new government has become a major global player rich with oil. OPEC has been redefined and the Saudis are left standing on the sidelines. But Russia is in turmoil. A hard-line Communist is in control, vowing to return Russia to its former power. His first move is to coerce the Saudi Crown Prince into a coalition to corner the world's oil market. His next is to assert his country's military power with a sudden act of aggression. It's time for the tanks to roll.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of tank action who didn't get enough in Farmer's Tin Soldiers (2003) will be delighted with the many, vividly described battle scenes in his latest-as American M1A2-SEP tanks go up against a superior force of Russian T-80Us on the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The political ground has shifted a bit: as Farmer says in a foreword, he was a young captain in Kuwait in 1996 when the first book was begun; "I'm a senior major now and sitting in a very different geographical location-Baghdad, Iraq." (That the foreword is dated January 2004 indicates that perhaps the war didn't go quite as he expected in the following months, turning Iraq into what the cover blurb calls "a stable new Iraqi government.") In this sequel to Tin Soldiers, the Iraqis team up with the U.S. Army to fight an alliance formed between the Saudis and a repressive new Russian leader. Readers who can buy into this idea should find the ensuing desert tank battles a source of excitement and satisfaction.

Iron Tigers Why Havent't you read it
By John M. Trofimuk
Michael Farmer's first book Tin Soldiers was the best armored warfare book I had ever read! Iron Tigers is just as good.

When Russia's fragile democracy fails, a hard line former communist takes over. In Saudi Arabia, the new peaceful Iraq begins to answer the oil needs of the West leaving the Saudis in the cold. The Saudis seek a new ally. With a powerful new alliance the Russians and Saudis move to dominate the world's oil reserves by conquering Iraq, Kuwait, the UAR and Qatar. The only thing in the way is the M1A2-SEPs of the 1st Cavalry Division and Patrick Dillon's tanks of Cold Steel.

This book was excellent. Patrick Dillon, Dave Bennett and Colonel Jones all return. New characters like Rolf Krieger and Luke Dodd are great additions to the storyline. Farmer returns with the same technical detail and descriptive writing that made me think once or twice I was crawling around the desert. I love these kinds of books so I have read quite a few and can tell you this book will be in your top five. If you enjoyed Tin Soldiers this book is for you, and can't wait for the third book. READ THIS BOOK!

Russia and Saudi Arabia Start World War III..........
By Glenn Steinhilber
The emergence of a stable and democratic Iraq has greatly shifted the balance of power in the Middle East. As a consequence, Saudi Arabia has found itself all but marginalized. When hard line elements in Russia, promising to return their nation to its former glory, come to power the Saudi's see an opportunity. A Russo-Saudi alliance is formed with the goal of driving the United States from the region and gaining control of the worlds oil reserves. Standing in their way are elements of the Unites States military and the battle hardened Iron Tigers.

That is the premise behind Michael Farmer's military thriller "Iron Tigers". It is a straight forward, get to point war story. While not on a par with Tom Clancy's World War III masterpiece "Red Storm Rising" or works by Larry Bond (Vortex and Red Phoenix) it is nonetheless a fast paced, enjoyable read.

As an active duty member of the military serving with CENTCOM Farmers knowledge of tactics and tank combat is clearly seen within the pages of "Iron Tigers". His writing reminds me of Harold Coyle (Team Yankee and The Ten Thousand). He also does a nice job of taking the reader into the halls of power in Washington and Moscow to observe some the statecraft and brinkmanship involved in waging a war.

The characters in "Iron Tigers" are fairly one dimensional and standard for a novel of this type. There are two exceptions. Rolf Krieger is a Schwarzenegger-esque type character, the son of parents from the East Germany he has a burning hatred of Russians and is delighted for an opportunity to confront the Russians in battle. The other is a Jack Russell Terrier named Phantom who survives a run in with a brutal Russian Colonel to fight another day.

The story while fast moving and entertaining does feel a bit rushed particularly a cloak and dagger B plot inside the Kremlin itself. This B plot alone could make a great read. Fans of the movie "Patton" will appreciate the climax of "Iron Tigers" be it a bit farfetched.

A few faults aside "Iron Tigers" is a nicely conceived, well-executed military thriller and well worth a look.

Iron Tigers
By Gary in WV
If you are looking for an extremely serious "what if" alternative history selection or a U.S. Military Senior Service School case study of a potential event, this is the wrong book for you. However, if you are looking for an entertaining, page turning, technically accurate story, this is definitely worth a look. I am always in search of well written, historically based alternative history books, but with the lack of such books in the genre, I have begun reading many more straight fictional military action stories.

I have been a military history buff, specifically WW II, since I was a child and I have read alternative history accounts from Conroy to Gingrich. Micheal Farmer spins a tale that is exciting, albeit at times predictable, and will do all John Wayne fans justice. His military background and understanding of tactics, weapon systems and their capabilities enhances the story's "believability factor."

While many of his characters, their interactions and their developments will make Hollywood proud, that does not detract enough from the overall story to diminish its entertainment factor. Again, as long as you enter into this book reminding yourself that is an military thriller and not a closely disected/researched alternative history event, you will enjoy this book.

As a former military member and veteran of SW Asia, the premise was intriguing. Farmer didn't delve too intricately in the overarching strategic picture and the geo-political events that would be ongoing, but he did add enough to answer the reasons why certain tactical events were occurring. I would have liked to have seen less "Vince Flynn" and that energy put into the military events, but it didn't detract from immensely from the story.

Again, this was a light, page turning, entertaining story that was grounded with enough technical and tactical accuracy to allow me to add an additional star in my evaluation. Keep your expectations a little more "Hollywoodish" and not "think tank" based and you should enjoy this book as a nice break from the heavier selections. I will read Farmer again.
