A Refreshing Look at the History of Marian Devotion

Wendy M. Wright, professor of theology at Creighton University, has previously published numerous works regarding Salesian spirituality and tradition. Her latest publication is a refreshing look at the history of Marian devotion, and the works of art dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels by the past and present pilgrims of Los Angeles. Cardinal Mahony, writing in the Foreword, affirms that Wright's latest work is much more than a Marian art book, or a travelogue meant to appease the whim of its homesick author. Mahony rightfully attests that "Wright places herself in the midst of the mothers of the despised, the sisters who serve the wounded and the weak...who struggle to keep faith and manage to do so...due to the woman whose words are echoed in choirs, pews, prayer books and on the lips of countless millions across the miles and through the years" (vii-viii). Although this volume is replete with wondrous images of Marian statues and stained-glass representations of the Queen Mother, Wright's work will inspire a deeper appreciation of the Theotokos to be found in the reader's own backyard.

Each chapter is centered on a different form of Marian devotion, found within a particular area of the Diocese. In the chapter entitled "Mystical Rose," the reader learns of the Litany of Loreto Windows (St. Ambrose Church, West Hollywood), of which Wright describes: "The lower panels of the Ambrose windows speak of a Mary of cosmic proportions. She is not only the mother of the human Jesus but also the chosen woman whose immaculate conception and assumption mark her as the fully realized human person" (71). Wright later internalizes that Mary, like the Mystical Rose, is the bud that unfurls to receive the divine rays of the sun.

Wright's latest publication is highly recommended, not only for the beautiful Marian images contained therein, but also for the author's concise and poignant writing style. Although this work should appeal to a wide audience, it should be especially appreciated by students of Cultural Anthropology and Marian devotion in modern times.

Not good

I got this book for an online class in Cross-sectional anatomy. Maybe this review is partly my frustration with taking this material online, so take it for what it's worth.

The book is nothing but a dry recital of facts. If you are trying to learn the material forget it. If you already know it, then you might find it nice. I don't.

The text refers to images that are spread throught several pages (and not the page with the text on it). This is very frustrating. Images are labeled in code, this also frustrating. It would take more space, but I think you could concentrate on an image and explain it, then move onto another image.

Caused more frustration than anything

This was the required text for my Sectional Anatomy course, as part of my radiography curriculum. I found the layout of the book disorganized and frustrating. I felt it would have been helpful and appropriate for the text to address the sequencing of CT/MRI images instead of showing a random shot here or there...I suppose that's difficult to do without a multimedia/interactive presentation, but I still had alot of trouble learning via this text. I found the abbreviated captions virtually useless and ill-concieved. It's one thing if you're tyring to quiz yourself and want a hint, but if you're trying to learn from scratch, it would have made much more sense seeing the long-hand terms written out in the columns so we know what we're looking at. Having to glance down at the caption and search for the abbreviation in question proved very distracting to the learning process. And the written text was...well, not enough text. Instead of offering helpful ways to differentiate and remember the many different body parts and structures, the text follows a very robotic "the A bone connects to the B bone which leads to the C artery and supplies the D organ...". I felt overwhelmed with similar-sounding descriptions and didn't take much away from the learning experience that wasn't lost in days. If I already had an understanding of cross-sectional anatomy before using this text, it may have served as a succinct review, but given the fact it is assigned to first-time X-sectional learners I felt it was too abstract and devoid of personality. If I decide to go into CT or MRI in the future, I plan on selling this book and doing a little research on finding the best and most current text available at the time. I can tell this one won't age well.

Very tedious reading and I've taken Anatomy & Physiology before with other books (e.g., Marieb-Hoehn which I consider superior in many ways, including readability.

The drawings are of poor quality making it difficult to ascertain the locations of the anatomical parts.

Great book, but not an introduction.

This book is very readable if you have some knoledge about quantum mechanics. It shows how to calculate things using the theory but does not explain the physical part in much detail.
It makes a good companion to the Feynman book where you have the physics greatly explained but little mathematical detail.
If you are new tho the subject look somewhere else first. If you want to know how to get results from the theory this is the book.

About the Author
Conductor and teacher Emily Freeman Brown has appeared with orchestras throughout the world including Europe, both North and South America and Asia.
