An introduction to the basics of futures trading

This book is a good place to start for the aspiring futures trader. It tries to answer the questions on why you should trade futures, what the nature of the futures market consists of, the mechanics of futures trading, and the main reasons for price behavior. The book covers both the fundamental valuations due to supply and demand and the aspects of technical trading the futures charts. The books reviews spreads, option contracts for futures and the money management necessary for traders to stay in the futures trading game. The book shows the studies that try to determine who wins in the futures trading game and why. The book does a great job of going through each futures market and explains what exactly is being traded, the basics about that futures contracts market and the size of the contracts and the means for which they are deliverable by. Very interesting and informative book.

How To Trade The Futures Markets

This is the definitive book on learning about the futures markets. One guy said that the futures market is the fastest game in town. And indeed it is a fast paced game. The authors go into the BASICS OF THE GAME, PLAYING THE GAME AND TRADING, LOSERS AND WINNERS, BROKERS and CHOOSING THE GAME AND IT'S MARKETS. The authors go quite in-depth in regards to explaining all of the different markets and the things which effect them. I would encourage any aspiring want-a-be futures trader get this book.

Second edition was better.

I bought the second edition, in paperback in 2000. It was good enough that I used it, as well as a specific book regarding regulations, to pass the Series 3 (Futures) licensing exam. Of the six dozen books about futures that I bought several years later, none came close to the quality and presentation of the information found in the second edition. Unfortunately the book disappeared, and when I wanted to clarify some information that I couldn't quite remember, I bought this, the third edition. But I'm finding it disjointed, sometimes clumsy, and no longer a 'bible' for futures. Charts and tables have been updated (now they are just a decade old), and I think financials have new material, but I don't have the feeling that the author/editor has the grasp and knowledge of the previous authors. It's like the author/editor calls this the third edition for sales reasons, but it should be considered (just) another book about futures. I'm disappointed, and will probably sell this and buy the second edition again.

Good Profit = Good Book

Overall the book is well written and easy to read and includes a personal side of Charles Koch not seen before-like the 153 death threats he got in 2014. The book discusses how Koch has grown tremendously since the 1960's (Charles didn't simply inherit the company as some might say). At 79 Koch still puts in 9 hour work days. The company has grown so much by reinvesting 90% of their earnings back into the company. What is interesting is how Koch Industries despite having 100,000 employees doesn't appear to be bureaucratic and individuals are always asked to challenge and consider continuous improvement which sometimes never occurs at even Fortune 500 companies.

Overall the book is a mix of economics, a business profile, behavioral finance, philosophy, and good story telling of business failures. What I enjoyed the most Charles Koch is honest about his failures (there are plenty too). At one time Koch believed the company would go bankrupt in the 1970s. Koch tries to apply Market Based Management to every day examples (including the NFL and even how much time he should spend working editing grammar of the book he wrote). Case studies at the end of the book are interesting. Anecdotes of Koch over the long company history are sprinkled throughout the book. For instance the company got rid of insurance programs and mainly self insures. Only downside of book is wished it had more of the personal side. The book is really a great book for anyone who wants to try to live their life to their maximum potential.

The author explains how he has woven his personal philosophy and core values into critical management tools to help sustain business profitability and high growth rates. Fascinating to read about managing "Decision Rights" - allowing the person with best relevant knowledge or , as he says, "comparative advantage" to make decisions as opposed to the most tenured pedigreed ranking person. A refreshing and unabashed primer on capitalism in action.

Read Koch-- I find myself wanting to live more like this gentle giant!

You have to read about Charles Koch to believe that integrity at this high level of business still exists in America. He is a truly a remarkable man that has the kind of character that I pray my own children one day will exhibit in their businesses and their private lives. You will get a picture in Good Profit why his company went from $61 million annually in the 60s to over $110 billion today. His firm boils down to how he picks his employees-- values over talent. He turns down the most capable seekers if they do not treat people with the utmost of respect and show great levels of humility. This is rare stuff in business these days. Just think where our nation could be if more business owners would be more old fashioned like this rare gem. You will get a picture in his book of how generational ethics comes down from his father who wrote a touching letter to him as he gave him a significant sum of money sharing with his son that he will consider it a mistake to have given him this money if he steals the glory and pride of accomplishment. Read Koch and you will want to be more like this gentle giant!

Oppression hasn't quite disappeared in the 30 years since Alicia Bay Laurel wrote these words, but, thanks to the enduring legacy of the back-to-the-land movement and the possibilities of telecommuting alike, more and more people are living in the "quiet places" Laurel celebrates. Living on the Earth was a well-worn (and bestselling) bible for the urban hipsters who fled the city and took up such pursuits as organic farming and leather tanning in the early 1970s; its author, a musician and artist who now makes her home in Hawaii, made their acclimation to country life just a little bit easier with her user-friendly instructions on such matters as how to keep gophers from invading the veggie patch and how to get rid of those nasty lice that once served as the mascots of bohemian existence.

Lice or no, the countryside still has its undeniable charms. The reissue of Laurel's handwritten, simply illustrated manual will appeal to anyone contemplating a new life beyond the city--or merely seeking pointers on how to simplify daily life. Things have changed, of course, since Laurel first self-published her zeitgeist-drenched book in 1970. Where the original edition had seed-to-bud instructions for growing marijuana, the reissue now comes with a modest disclaimer in which Laurel admits to having lost her taste for the stuff decades ago--but it also comes with a ringing endorsement for the use of hemp fiber and paper as a planet-friendly measure of economy. Still, though updated here and there, Living on the Earth retains its recipes for everything from making Moroccan djellabas to molding scented candles to delivering a baby in the privacy of one's tipi, all good things to know.

Fun Guide to Living on the Earth

After waking very early this very morning, I started to read Living on the Earth and was halfway through by breakfast. While I had considered a hand-lettered book to be more difficult to read, I could not have been more wrong.

The hand lettering brought a sense of comfort and the contents reminded me of my childhood in Africa. If you lived in a rural area during the 60s and 70s, many of the items in this book will be very familiar. If you love handwritten letters from friends, then this book will quickly find a place in your heart.

So, there I was stirring a 5-grain oatmeal mixture for breakfast and I looked down and caught a glimpse of my painted toes reflecting in the glass oven door. Suddenly I was transported to the years of my childhood where we build our own tree houses, watched carrots grow, milked cows, raised chickens, learned how to sew, experienced tick bite fever and snacked on friendship cake while walking barefoot on the warm earth.

Living on the Earth is an enchanting read filled with lyricism and whimsy. It is written in a spontaneous style and the topics range from soap making to building rocking cradles out of barrels. Alicia Bay Laurel has illustrated the entire book and it is a completely personal experience.

Some of the highlights include backpacking tips, making hammocks with macram�, making your own soaps, sewing peasant blouses, making your own moccasins, and building a kiln for making pottery.

There is also information on how to make candles, bamboo flutes, bean bags, clothing, rose petal jam, organic diet soda, vanilla extract, dried fruits, nut butters, ice cream, sunflower milk, miso, roasted soy beans, smoked fish, bread, beef jerky, sour dough starter, steamed acorns, plum pudding and herbal tinctures.

As I sit here with my lovely cozy heated blanket and fluffy slippers I can dream about living out in the wild as my washing machine swishes about with the Seventh Generation laundry soap I recently found at a health food store. This book has many ideas you can incorporate into your normal home life. You don't have to live in a commune to enjoy the information about essential oils, nature-inspired products or environmental issues. The author recommends things like hemp paper and explores the many uses of apple cider vinegar and pumpkin seeds.

To say the least, I was intrigued. This is definitely a must-read book for everyone interested in natural remedies. There are recipes for making herbal tinctures and you may find yourself looking for "myrrh." If you love to cook you may be intrigued by the recipe for Plum Pudding.

Alicia Bay Laurel is writing a modern sequel for the global family. "Still Living on the Earth" will be published in 2005. This book was updated in 1999 and is filled with useful addresses and websites. I loved the list of "more books that are still valuable 30 years later!" A helpful index completes this fun guide to living on the earth.

I loved reading this book! While reading you may find yourself becoming nostalgic, enthusiastic about hiking or even making lists to buy a variety of herbs.

Remembering a time this innocent.....

While the 60's are often represented as a time of turbulence and decadence, there are glimmerings of peaceful co-habitation that rise to the surface like cream on an old fashioned bottle of milk. "Living on the Earth" is one of the positive representations. This book is FULL of information; from ways of worship to dealing with your fellow man - and in an era when politics and religion are taboo subjects! I am deeply reminded of Henry David Thoreau's "Walden", with one exception. Philoshophy aside, Alicia Bay Laurel"s book puts it all into practice! For God's sake: somebody reprint this book!

1970s illustrated survival guide for simple communal living

This book is illustrated by the author in simple line drawings. She draws knowledge about communal hippie living from many individuals and acknowledges them in her book. They give specific directions on how to build your own shelter, dig a proper latrine, grow your own food, sew your own clothing, and live harmoniously on the earth with your fellow humans. About the Author
David C. Brown is Professor of Computer Science and has a collaborative appointment as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is also affiliated with the Manufacturing, Robotics and Learning Sciences programs. His research interests include computational models of engineering design, and the applications of artificial intelligence to engineering and manufacturing. He has published Design Problem Solving: Knowledge Structures and Control Strategies coauthored with B. Chandrasekaran (1990) and Intelligent Computer Aided Design coedited with M.B. Waldron and H. Yoshikawa (1992). From 2001-2011, he was the Editor in Chief of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering, Design, Analysis and Manufacturing, and has been on the editorial boards for Concurrent Engineering: Research and Application; Research in Engineering Design; and The International Journal of Design Computing.
