Mapping U.S. history

Although this is meant to be accompanied by a set of worksheets, this book stands alone as one of the better visual, geographic explanations of U.S. history that I have found. I use it in my courses and students generally are engaged by it. Each map is accompanied by very brief textual notation, along with the standard map key images. Definitely worth checking out.

Solid introduction to developing semantic web applications

This is a very solid introduction to the world of semantic web for developers who need a practical guide. Even if you did not encounter the concepts related to the semantic web, you will not have any trouble because the author gently introduces every concept and provides you with practical examples and justifications. After having read the first half of the book you'll have a very good grasp of RDF, RDFS, N3, OWL, SPARQL, FOAF, Linked Data and other underlying concepts and technologies. But the story does not end there, in the second part of the book you'll proceed to develop concrete Semantic Web applications using established semantic frameworks such as Jena. You will also have learned how to utilize the most important semantic linked data resources such as DBpedia. The author shows a lot of examples with accompanying source code and does not refrain from explaining the intricate parts of the code as well as pointing out potential improvements and pitfalls in real life scenarios.

I would be willing to give the book five stars if only a little more care were taken in its editing. I'd expect a better proofreading from Springer editors. And even though lots of references are provided within the text it would be good to have a references or bibliography section at the end of the book. I was also surprised because the author never mentioned AllegroGraph, an important player in the field of graph databases / RDF stores.

My conclusion is that if you are going to read only one book for semantic web then it should be this book.

A really good book with really poor editing

The Semantic Web is a very complex topic with a lot of technologies involved. This book covers the topic very well and requires only some prior XML and Java knowledge to follow the examples. Otherwise all subjects are explained in a very professional and reader-friendly way. The thing that I don't like about the book is that it's packed full of grammatical and syntactical errors. OK, I understand that English is not the author's native language, but somebody whose is must have reviewed this book and corrected all the grammatical and other errors because sometimes it's annoying to discover 5 or six errors or more in a single page.

Other than that the book is great. I recommend it if you've never had any experience in the Semantic Web and you have to learn the subject quickly for an exam or something else.

The best of its kind

The book is very well organized, in a logical manner, and covers well the area of Semantic Web Programming.

Liyang Yu does an excellent job of explaining the concepts in great detail. He assumes no prior knowledge on the part of the reader and explains everything in a very methodical manner, leaving no stone unturned. All the explanations are to-the-point and very complete.

Recommended as the best book I encountered in this area.

Since 1988 he has developed automated indexing systems, corporate style guides, knowledge management systems, master glossaries, master indexes, and user interface guidelines for companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Hughes Aircraft Company, Symantec Corporation, and Xerox Corporation. A graduate with honors of philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley, he completed a five-year sequential program in technical communication at UCLA. He is a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication.

Somewhat disappointing

I was recently investigating options for single sourcing when I came across Kurt Ament's book Single Sourcing: Building Modular Documentation. Based on the glowing reviews the book received, I decided to order it from Amazon.com.

Unfortunately, the book was not what I expected. For the price of $[...] on Amazon, the book provides little help to experienced professional writers. My biggest complaint is that too many pages of the book are spent promoting the author's own ideas of style and usage rather than discussing true single sourcing issues. (134 out of 210 pages, to be precise, were dedicated to matters of style.) Some of the style and usage guidelines are handy for modular documentation, however, I believe each company should decide its own appropriate guide for style and usage rather than relying on the author's word. Had he couched his preferred guidelines as examples, perhaps I would be less inclined to view them negatively.

Granted, understanding how to simplify and standardize language is key to developing text for reuse within a body of work and reuse text for localization. Writers need to understand how to simplify and standardize text before starting to think about how to leverage tools for single sourcing. Describing how to use standard language, however, is different than promoting a writing style, and probably requires far fewer pages than Ament dedicated to it.

One of the reviews on Amazon raved about how well this book could be applied in conjunction with Information Mapping. I disagree. The author clearly does not approve of breaking processes or procedures into tables, which is a cornerstone of Information Mapping. In fact the author has very strict guidelines about when you should use a table and when you shouldn't. (Again, he is pontificating a particular style rather than offering solid advice on single sourcing.) Don't take my word for it; examine the table of contents very carefully before you buy this book.

What the book does well, is offer good general advice on where to start thinking about chuncking your documentation in order to reuse it again and again. Also, Ament provides a concise lexicon of single sourcing terms that will help you properly articulate your ideas to your teammates. Most of the flags and highlighting I used in the book were confined to chapters 1, 2, and 5.

This book might serve well in an introductory professional writing course, but if your company is seeking guidance on single sourcing, find a book that is tool specific or find a book that sticks to single sourcing and leaves style and usage decisions up to you.

Ament's book does not delve into the details of tools implementation. However, writing modular documentation that can be chunked and reused is a necessary prerequisite to single sourcing.
It's a good idea to understand the stylistic and writing requirements before getting into tools. Ament's book should be used in conjunction with tool-specific information.

not what I expected

This book is a style guide, with guidance like, "When introducing small sections that contain subsections, use itemized lists rather than sentences"; "Begin optional steps with a clear visual and verbal indication that they are not mandatory"; and "When listing commands, follow the capitalization rules on which your product is based." The beginning and end of the book provide a shallow discussion of single sourcing, but much of the book is style guidance like this. Maybe I'm missing something, but what does that have to do with single sourcing? I sure don't understand these 5-star reviews and encourage you to flip through the pages of this book before buying so you know what you're getting.

Most effective for exams

THE SIMPLEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ABSORB AND RETAIN THE ESSENTIALS OF COMPANY LAW FOR EXAMS

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

The “Key Facts Key Cases” series of books are first class exam crammers (if we are allowed to use this term!) and this edition of “Company Law” written by the excellent team of Ann Ridley and Chris Shepherd is one of the best revision texts we have seen in recent years.

As with all the Routledge text books, this particular title is probably the most comprehensive on the market as an introduction to the way in which “Company Law” operates in England and Wales for those new to this developing subject sometimes referred to as ‘corporate governance’. The two authors adopt a clear and simple approach with legal vocabulary which is carefully clarified throughout the book.

One of the main reasons why we consider the Routledge series of legal textbooks to be of outstanding value both in terms of cost and in content is the way in which their authors (all legal experts) explain substantive legal issues in such a readable fashion.

For both tutors and students, a decision on which textbook or revision book to use is always difficult but it is clear to us from the feedback we have received from students that the Routledge texts lead the legal field. Many of their titles also have excellent links to websites sometimes marked as ‘companion websites’ which also add much assistance to the hard-pressed learner and is a great additional tool for all.

We would also say that the formats used by Routledge for their books are very much of a mainstream formula for legal texts which eases the student into methods of legal reasoning for those just beginning their legal studies and for all undergraduates: they certainly helped us with our preparation so do ensure you look very carefully at all the titles they have on offer!

The authors make good use of diagrams, tables and regular checklists at the end of each chapter which act as summaries to make the subject come alive in a most engaging style for modern learning outcomes.

The key definitions and the many key cases together with the way in which the learning objectives are achieved in each of the 12 chapters are of particular help to those new to the subject and we consider that this title remains an ideal first introduction to Company Law for undergraduates, those preparing for academic or professional examinations, and anyone interested in this growing area of substantive law for 21st century.
