the sixth edition of Valuation , published last year, a quarter of a century after the first, is a reminder of why shareholder value is still the most powerful idea in business and why many criticisms thrown at it are unfair. (The Economist, April 2016)

Pandemonium, by Warren Fahy

Deep beneath the Ural Mountains, in an underground city carved out by slave labor during the darkest hours of the Cold War, ancient caverns hold exotic and dangerous life-forms that have evolved in isolation for countless millennia. Cut off from the surface world, an entire ecosystem of bizarre subterranean species has survived undetected—until now.

Biologists Nell and Geoffrey Binswanger barely survived their last encounter with terrifying, invasive creatures that threatened to engulf the planet. They think the danger is over until a ruthless Russian tycoon lures them to his underground metropolis, where they find themselves confronted by a vicious menagerie of biological horrors from their past—and by entirely new breeds of voracious predators. Now they're rising up from the bowels of the Earth to consume the world as we know it.

USA Today praised Warren Fahy's debut novel, Fragment, as "a rollicking tale [that] will enthrall readers of Jurassic Park and The Ruins." Now Fahy sets off an even more thrilling stampede of action and suspense, bursting forth from the hellish depths of...Pandemonium.

JANUARY 28

12:02 P.M.
“Pokhali!” bellowed Taras Demochev, Guard No. 114 of Corrective Labor Camp No. 479. He pushed through the men in the tunnel as he walked beside a mining car carrying a load of blasting powder. “Why aren’t we moving?”
For nine days, prisoners had struggled with faulty pneumatic jackhammers and pickaxes to widen the last fifty yards of the tunnel so that a newly arrived boring machine could gnaw through a stubborn layer of dolomite. Tethered by straining cables a hundred yards up the grade behind Taras, the borer steamed like a locomotive on wide-gauge rails.
Taras barely regarded the half-starved prisoners clogging the tunnel ahead, casting them aside like scarecrows as he bulled forward. The wretched convicts, even the ones in their twenties, were already dokhodyaga, “goners,” buying their last hours of life by digging their own graves. “Move your asses!” Taras yelled. “Out of my way!”
A young subordinate guard rushed to meet him.
“What’s the holdup, Yvgeny?”
“Some zeks fell out of the airshaft.”
As the men parted before him, Taras saw five men sprawled on the ground under a hole in the ceiling twenty yards ahead. He had sent the men up that morning to continue drilling the ventilation shaft. Their heavy pneumatic drills had battered and mangled them on the way down, and the men lay tangled under the heavy equipment and hoses in a pitiful heap. Taras strode forward and fired his revolver into the groaning pile, shocking the younger guard. Many of the prisoners doubled over at the earsplitting gunshot, though most could not hear.
Since they had come under Taras’s command, none of these men officially existed anymore. Once they were sent to Corrective Labor Camp No. 479, their lives were erased. Sixty thousand ghosts labored in this ancient salt mine near the village of Gursk in the Kaziristani highlands. Criminals and lawyers, rapists and poets, murderers and doctors, all were now zeks to the guards. Like ants, they worked until they died and were carried away.
On the mountainside above, the zeks slept in rough wooden barracks slapped together with timber from the foothills of Mount Kazar. Each of their dormitories was the size of a double-wide trailer and housed 120 men by day and 120 by night. Hundreds of the ramshackle dormitories dotted the mountain slopes around the salt mine that, until now, had provided the nearby town’s sustenance for seven centuries. Since their new rulers confiscated the mine four years ago, the villagers of Gursk called the mine that once fed them, “Stalin’s Mouth.”
Over twenty thousand men had been swallowed by the mine. Convicts continuously arrived, but the camp’s population never grew. The townspeople rarely saw salt harvested these days. Instead, an endless stream of mining cars and conveyors disgorged a miniature mountain range of pulverized rock at the foot of the mountain.
More bewildering to the villagers was what they saw going into the mine. Endless shipments arrived by train and were taken by truck and mining car into the mountain—cement and ceiling fans, bricks and marble bathtubs, Persian rugs, alabaster pillars, terra-cotta tiles, bronze streetlamps, bicycles, beds, even baby carriages. Some whispered that they had seen crates of French champagne, beluga caviar, even ZIS-115 limousines straight from Automotive Factory No. 2 in Moscow, all fed into the mine’s mouth.
Taras fired another round at the hesitating prisoners, this time dropping one with a gut shot. “Get going!” he shouted at the rest. He had outlived 61 guards who came before him and 122 guards after. He knew he would be executed along with any convicts who tried to escape on his watch. This had never become a problem for him, since most of Taras’s zeks were dead after only a few weeks. His superiors did not complain about this. In fact, they began deliberately assigning certain prisoners to his detail, which Taras Demochev took as a compliment.
Taras waved away the smoke of his pistol, questioning his eyes: instead of running away from the bullets, this time the zeks were running toward him. A terror rehearsed in his dreams gripped him. He backed away, but as he turned to run, he noticed blue and green sparks gushing out of the unfinished ventilation shaft. An oval of light oozed from the hole and glided like a flashlight beam over the ceiling. Then it peeled from the roof and landed on the back of a screaming convict.
Taras decided to hold his ground. He fired his gun, and two men fell as the rest retreated. But one of the zeks leaped like a gazelle over his comrades’ heads, shrieking and soaring with superhuman force. He landed on all fours at Taras’s feet, his back covered by a glowing mass. The convict jackknifed upright, and as he recognized Taras, an expression of relief came over his face. Taras was horrified, having never provoked that response in a zek before.
The convict reached forward and clutched Taras’s arm. Two white ovals glided down the prisoner’s wrist, over Taras’s gun, and under the guard’s sleeve.
“Shit!” Taras yelled. He felt tongues fringed with needles sliding up his arm. Leeches! he thought. With urgent strength, the zek jerked the barrel of Taras’s pistol to his own forehead with pleading eyes. Taras obliged him, squeezing the trigger and blasting his head apart. Then he pulled himself away as the prisoner dropped like a marionette whose strings had been cut.
Half a dozen glowing ovals were now sliding over the tunnel’s ceiling toward him. Hundreds of glowing red and yellow goblinlike creatures poured from the ventilation shaft onto the men. Taras turned and ran as the tunnel was filled with shrieks. “Let the Grinder go!” he screamed at the men in the tunnel up ahead.
Rising on all fours behind him, the dead zek leaped into the air.
Taras did not look back as he made it to the narrow-gauge rails beside the tunnel borer and shouted, “Cut it loose!”
As the dead zek landed on all fours in front of the hissing machine, Taras reached the far side and the convicts there uncoupled the cables, unleashing the machine’s two hundred tons of mass, which gathered a terrible momentum as it rumbled down the tracks.
Taras scratched at his chest as he charged up the tunnel, past laborers who were plastering and tiling the walls. “Out of my way!” Taras snarled, kicking them aside.
The boring machine accelerated as it mowed over miners and smashed into the mining cart that carried the blasting powder. Driving the cart like a warhead through a forest of flesh and bone, it finally crashed into the dolomite dead end of the tunnel and detonated its payload, rupturing the tunnel like a backfiring cannon.
6:39 P.M.
When the first inspection team arrived, the only human remains visible at the edge of the rubble were Taras Demochev’s hand, disembodied, still clutching his Tokarev pistol.
It was soon determined that it was more practical to cement over this tunnel and memorialize the loss of men with a plaque, and then try drilling in a different direction.
Guard No. 321 took the undamaged gun and pushed some gravel over Guard No. 114’s hand with his boot.

A great followup that blends speculative science with nonstop action and adventure!
By William Lorenz
*********SPOILER-FREE REVIEW************

The first book in the series, Fragment, presented a very unique and original storyline that dealt with an offshoot or "fragment" of evolution by explaining, through real science and speculation, what could happen if a land mass was isolated and allowed to evolve undisturbed for 500 million years. In Pandemonium, Warren Fahy brings us another untouched world deep in the Ural Mountains.

Pandemonium wastes no time jumping right back into the story from where the first book ended. A megalomaniac Russian oligarch has founded an underground city, but something is preventing the power from being turned on. Who does he enlist to help solve the problem but our favorite heroes from Fragment. Once the team is back together in the underground city, all hell, or shall we say "pandemonium", breaks loose.

While Fragment was heavy on the scientific explanations, while still packing a lot of action and adventure, the opposite can be said for Pandemonium. The science aspect is still there but the action has been ratcheted up several notches. The world building in Pandemonium is once again right up there with the complexity of Hender's Island. Warren Fahy builds a completely new ecosystem from the ground up and explains it in a way that makes sense, from the base of the food chain all the way up to the new and deadly apex predator.

My criticism for the novel is short. There were a couple minor errors dealing with timescale in the plot and an ambiguity about a certain characters "armor". These points, however, are so minor as to take nothing away from the broad scope of the novel and, I feel, should have been caught by the editor.

Pandemonium blends speculative science with action and adventure that will have you frantically turning pages until its over. Pandemonium could be read as a standalone novel, though I highly recommend you read Fragment first. While the novel comes to a satisfying conclusion, I can only hope that Warren Fahy has many other worlds to create and explore with the cast of characters he has developed. 4 and 1/2 stars out of 5.

Bring On PANDEMONIUM
By Caroline Lee
If you have read the previous reviews of PANDEMONIUM, you have a pretty good idea of the story and the places to which the reader will travel. But even with this previous knowledge of where or what you are about to encounter, allow yourself to feel all the wonder of the unknown, the anticipation, the awe of discovery, the humor and fright that comes from the pages of this book.

Fahy builds his scenes carefully and they are remarkably fun sometimes, and simply horrifying at others. I found myself chuckling and gasping from chapter to chapter. His undergound creation and its awesome features and creatures are unlike anything previously imagined.

In the final chapters, when all havoc has broken out with all of the species attempting to stay alive, I was holding my breath again and again. What was happening was sheer and unique creativity at work.

I have read FRAGMENT, the prequel to PANDEMONIUM, and although a few references to this previous work are mentioned, they were handled so clearly and briefly that they had no effect on the continuity of this story. It was necessary, of course, to explain to a new reader how the amazing sels came to be a part of this book.

Without FRAGMENT there would never have been PANDEMONIUM but, I, personally, enjoyed this book more than FRAGMENT.

It's Another World Down There
By Greig Beck
In Fragment, Fahy created an island, a sliver or fragment of a continent that broke way from the mainland hundreds of millions of years ago. Evolution had taken a twist and a turn and given us some of the most bizarre and fantastic creatures i had ever read about -- or so i thought.

Fahy turns his prodigious imagination to a massive cave system below the Ural Mountains, there another world has been discovered, and this one just as bizarre and deadly as Henders Island. What would happen if the two worlds collided? Could mankind ever hope to survive?

I loved this book, and can only hope there is more to come.

Greig Beck

Review
"Liu Mingfu has written a subtle, sophisticated history of how he and many of his colleagues perceive American grand strategy since George Washington. Then, he proposes what China needs to do in the decades ahead so as not to "give the world to America." He argues not only for a Chinese defense force equal to the American military, but make an appeal to Americans to give up our domineering "hegemony." He prefers instead that we relax while a nation with 5,000 years of history leads the world with its superior virtue. American readers will be surprised to see how he recommends China follow many lessons from our history since 1776, but avoid our dark side. He praises the three greatest Chinese emperors of Qin, Han and Tang who combined a peaceful economic rise with a marital spirit and strong military forces."

Michael Pillsbury,Director of the Center for Chinese strategy Hudson Institute Washington DC

From the Back Cover
“In Liu’s view, no matter how much China commits itself to a ‘peaceful rise,’ conflict is inherent in U.S.–China relations. The relationship between China and the United Sates will be a ‘marathon contest’ and a ‘duel of the century.’” ―Henry Kissinger in On China

"[The China Dream] serves to explicate a distinct path (or “strategy”) for China, often misunderstood in the West, on its rise in a Pacific-centric world still dominated by U.S. hegemony. [Liu] dismisses the usual 'China threat' scare, but agrees that Sino-U.S. rivalry is inevitable and offers a vision on what may likely be a Chinese leadership role in helping to create a “harmonious world” on its way up." ―Dr. James C. Hsiung, professor of politics and international law, NYU

“Sino–American competition will be the defining game of the century, and for both sides, the process will be magnificent, the outcomes brilliant, and the effects lasting and far-reaching. [...] America, tough but young, and China, a strong and ancient nation, separated by the vast distance of the Pacific Ocean, are playing the largest game of global power in human history. [...] The outcome will certainly set the world down a path to a new age.” ―Liu Yazhou in the foreword

My Rating Is NOT an Endorsement of the Book's Ideas, but Recognition that It provides Extremely Important Content to Americans
By Loyd Eskildson
China's dream for a century has been to become the world's leading nation, a dream pursued and shared by three of its most notable leaders - Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zedong, and Deng Xiaoping. Sun Yat-sen believed that the only way China would become the world's leading nation would be to open its doors to foreign ideas and policies, and learn from the mistakes of other nations. In 1912 he called for foreign industries to enter China to set up businesses, and used the example of Japan's recent rise within 40 years after the mid-19th century to bolster his case. Mao, while also pursuing greatness for China, set it backwards via an opposite direction - economic autarky, believing self-sufficiency was the path to becoming a great power. Acerbating this misguided policy with erroneous priorities, unrealistic timetables, and fear of new ideas brought instead his disastrous 'Great Leap Forward' and the 'Cultural Revolution.' Fortunately, for China, Mao was soon followed by Deng Xiaoping's dogged reopening of China to foreign technology, methods, and ideas that are now bringing China's dream within reach.

China's quick ascent into the ranks of great powers has surpassed expectations of the world. It's per capita GDP in 2009 was 13.3X that of 1978, growing 8.7% during the period. Purchasing Power Parity calculations now rank China's economy as the world's largest. While many Westerners predict 'the coming China collapse,' they've been doing so for decades, with no sign of it actually occurring. Liu, instead predicts a 'marathon contest' for global leadership. Author Liu Mingu is a now retired well-known hawkish military commentator (former professor at Beijing's National Defense University) who believes China should displace the U.S. as world leader. My rating this as '5 Stars' does NOT mean that I agree and/or support the author's dream - simply that I believe it is a valid and invaluable summarization of high-level thinking in China - material that Americans and our leaders need to pay serious attention to.

Skeptics may rebut that author's conclusion by pointing out the obvious differential in military capabilities between the two nations. However, that would ignore China's asymmetric warfare capabilities - silent subs, 'carrier-killer' missiles, hacking our electric, pipeline, military, and financial infrastructures, and electro-magnetic warfare, as well as the fact that America's economy is unable to support even its existing military and foreign policy involvements. Even author Liu admits it's 'unnecessary for China's military to surpass the United States.' Another important Liu perspective - that great military power is still necessary to protect national security,' obviously a valid concern for a nation relying so heavily on imports for its energy supplies, and exports to fuel its economy.

Boosting nationalism is another major thrust of Liu Mingfu's. China has undergone a century of humiliation over roughly the last century by foreign powers - Austria-Hungary, England, France, Germany, Italy Japan, Russian, and U.S. forces have been involved. More recently, in 1979, China was again embarrassed militarily, this time by Vietnam, while Iraq War I shocked China's military with the effectiveness of American weapons vs. Iraq. China was also previously the recognized world leader in commerce and culture. Liu Mingu and countless others want to ensure this never recurs.

A popular blog post on Chinese nationalism gets quite explicit: 'The precise meaning of the Chinese Dream: 1)The UN relocates to Beijing. 2)(China's") Premier inspects Taiwan. 3)The Chinese national football team wins the World Cup. 4)Beijing accidentally bombs the Pentagon and expresses regret. 5)The Yuan becomes the sole international currency. 6)Increasing cases of Americans illegally immigrating to China!'

Another interesting and highly significant point, per Liu - that 'China possesses a superior cultural gene (I suspect he's referring to its strong Confucian heritage of serving government leaders) needed to become the world's leader.' It's hard to argue against the reality that 1.3 billion Chinese rowing in the same direction since 1979 (Deng Xiaoping's leadership began) have proven they can easily outpace 360 million Americans rowing in every direction at once. And here's another dose of cold reality - IQ samplings have repeatedly concluded that East Asian IQs average about 10-15 points over Caucasians - a MAJOR differential!

Chinese government corruption is another topic receiving considerable attention in 'The China Dream,' and endorses the concept that a rising nation needs a strong leader.

China experts see strong parallels between Liu's 'The China Dream' and actions/statements by Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic - strengthening the military, rooting out corruption, and dominating control of the levers of government. President Xi Jinping even refers to his actions as furthering 'The China Dream' beginning in November 2012, though he has never referred to the book in that manner. President Xi is also pursuing middle class average income reaching international standards by 2020.

Liu Mingfu's 'The China Dream' explicitly states that the overall goal of China should be to become 'the most powerful country in the world,' and that all of China's paramount leaders over the last century have shared this goal. He also asks China's leaders and the public to not have any 'illusions' about American goodwill regarding 'China's rise.' (We're certainly supporting that sense with the TPP, opposing China's efforts to start of new development bank in the Asia Pacific region, making/strengthening new alliances in the Pacific, and frequently challenging China's efforts to update its military.) Fortunately, he does not believe this competition will produce a major war. Meanwhile China has become less accepting of U.S. lecturing it, especially about democracy, Tibet, and economic management, and with Russia is deliberately undermining the dollar (eg. two major gas line construction deals between the two totally about $1 trillion and the ensuing gas sales will be priced in their own national currencies).

Liu Mingfu contends that America sets lots of traps to oppose China, such as exporting democracy to stir internal dissension, economic traps in the form of fomenting financial crises (eg. The 2008 'Great Recession,' The 1997 Asian Crisis, devaluations), diplomacy traps on the form of instigating relationships and fomenting conflicts. He believes America has never wavered to defend and maintain the status of world leaer, and China should not have any illusions on that topic.

it can be like reading old issues of Pravda
By Grimjack
A manifesto essentially describing at least one retired 2PLA Officer's vision of the PRC version of "Manifest Destiny" and march toward global leadership. Replete with expressions of Chinese Exceptionalism, riddled with bias and an Orwellian regard for history, there are some observations and criticisms of Western capitalism buried in this work worthy of consideration. If you are interested in current Chinese political and strategic thinking it's worth powering through the anti-western polemics, but be prepared, it can be like reading old issues of Pravda.

By Chopkoski
Shades of 1984. George Orwell would read this book and laugh his head off. A trite and misleading book that shows the mental deterioration under a tyrant state. So simply configured it reeks of a weak mindedness that cannot weather criticism. It tries to promote the New China. But China's heyday was 500 years ago. Today is is simply a place to outsource to; no new technologies come from China. But it has evolved paranoia to a high degree. Look at it to relax from any rigorous thinking.

Business or Blood: Mafia Boss Vito Rizzuto's Last War, by Peter Edwards, Antonio Nicaso

Bestselling crime writers Peter Edwards and Antonio Nicaso reveal the final years of Canada's top mafia boss, Vito Rizzuto, and his bloody war to avenge his family and control the North American drug trade.
Until Vito Rizzuto went to prison in 2006 for his role in a decades-old Brooklyn triple murder, he ruled the Port of Montreal, the northern gateway to the major American drug markets. A master diplomat, he won the respect of rival mafia clans, bikers and street gangs, and criminal business thrived on his turf. His family prospered and his empire grew--until one of North America's true Teflon dons finally lost his veneer. As he watched helplessly from his Colorado prison, the murders of his son and father made international headlines; the killings of his lieutenants and friends filled the pages of Canadian news; and the influence of the 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian Mafia, spread across Montreal faster than the blood of Rizzuto's crime family. In 2012, Vito Rizzuto emerged from prison, a 66-year-old man who could carefully rebuild his criminal empire or seek bloody revenge and damn the consequences. From the events leading to his imprisonment to his shocking death in December 2013, Business or Blood is the final chapter of Vito's story.

Terrific book. Very up to date research on the Montreal Mafia or the "Mileu" which the book terms organized crime in Montreal. Great writing especially with the cat and mouse game of Desjardins and Salvatore Montagna. The book makes Montagna out to be a very mischievous criminal entrepreneur whose presence became known quick in Montreal. Makes me wonder if Montagna wasn't behind the murder of Nicolo Rizzuto Jr. Still interested to see how the Montreal Mafia scenario plays out.
Quick notes about the book:
Giuseppe Fetta is not dead
Gerlando Sciascia was not murdered by Gambino family
Gerlando Sciascia did not criticize any Gambino family members for drug use.

Biting the Hand that Starves You: Inspiring Resistance to Anorexia/Bulimia (Norton Professional Books), by Richard Maisel, David Epston, A

This important book immediately draws the reader into the world of those struggling with anorexia/bulimia (a/b), whose stories, poems, and first-person accounts expose the 'voice' of these deadly problems.

The authors' decade-and-a-half collaboration with 'insiders' has yielded fresh answers to these life and death questions: How does a/b seduce and terrorize girls and women? Why is a/b successful in encouraging girls and women to unwittingly embrace their would-be murderer? How can such a murderer be exposed and thwarted? This book details a unique way of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia. By having conversations with insiders in which the problem is viewed as an external influence rather than a part of the person, these therapists show how to bring the tactics of a/b into the open, expose its deceptions, break its spell, and encourage defiance of its tyrannical rule. These innovations enable insiders, professionals, and loved ones to unite against anorexia/bulimia rather than allowing a/b to pit a professional or loved one against an insider, and the insider against herself. Coercion is sidestepped in favor of practices that are collaborative, accountable and spirit-nurturing. The groundbreaking discoveries outlined in this book will provide new options, inspiration and hope, not only for those who suffer at anorexia's hands, but also for their loved ones and healthcare professionals.

Review
“[A] consequential book that changes the way in which a/b is traditionally viewed and thus provides a framework for therapists which involves the use of narrative therapy. . . . The ‘insider knowledge’ provided, which includes journal entries and poems from clients, anecdotes, and therapy session transcripts, helps readers truly grasp the difficulties involved in dealing with a/b and also that recovery is indeed possible.” (International Journal of Psychotherapy)

“With unfailing respect for those suffering from anorexia, Maisel, Epston, and Borden offer a fresh analysis of the etiology of anorexia and bulimia and give us effective new therapeutic tools. . . . [G]ives psychiatrists and clinicians in every therapeutic setting the theoretical framework and practice options needed to treat anorexia and bulimia. This is the book we have been waiting for. . . Patients and their families will find this book invaluable. . . . If you are interested in compassionate, respectful, and effective treatment of anorexia and bulimia, get this landmark book.” (Psychiatric Services)

“[O]ffers a promising way of conceptualizing eating disorders that allows therapist, client, and loved ones to maintain positivity and hope during those periods that seem the bleakest.” (PsycCritiques)

“It is organized and written so effectively, with insider narratives and therapy transcripts as driving forces, that the structure is almost invisible, and the reader is pretty much swept along by the content―which is well worth engaging with. . . . [T]he book is a fresh and inspiring start for this new approach. Full of different voices and creativities, in practice as well as in therapy, it gives hope.” (Counseling Resource)

“Biting the Hand That Starves You is an inspiring book suitable for anyone touched by an eating disorder, whether they are professionals, carers or sufferers. Using techniques grounded in narrative therapy, the authors offer a fresh and empowering way of approaching anorexia/bulimia (a/b) from an anti-anorexic standpoint. . . . As a professional who works with eating disorders, I was left feeling highly motivated to employ techniques outlined in the text and share the ideas with colleagues. I could not recommend this book more.” (Psychology and Psychotherapy: Theory Research and Practice)

“This is a powerful book, written in extremely strong language reflecting the strong feelings of its authors. . . . [A]n absolute must-have for anyone working to help sufferers from these killing disorders.” (Human Givens Journal (UK))

“[A]fter over 20 years of battling with anorexia/bulimia, I have found something that speaks my language. . . . I have been asked over the years (and have often asked myself) what is it going to take to get out of this torture. I never really attempted answering this question until we finally got the book.” (Archives of Resistance)

“This important work captures the nature of the violent, profoundly personal dialogue between anorexia/bulimia and the men and women who have to contend with it. Biting the Hand that Starves You will be of great interest to both the professional and the layperson, written as it is in a highly intelligent but clear fashion, free of the stylistic murkiness that often clouds important works of research. By applying the highly effective methods of narrative therapy, the authors emphasize the very real potential for effective treatment of these devastating problems. This book offers not only welcome hope to those frustrated with the current state of ‘eating disorder’ treatment but it also provides a lifeline of language to those who are trapped in the terrible silence of anorexia/bulimia.” (Marya Hornbacher, author of Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia)

“Biting the Hand that Starves You breaks new ground by presenting in their own words, the hard-won knowledge of people who have taken their lives back from anorexia and bulimia. The authors invite us―those struggling with anorexia and bulimia as well as the therapists working with them―into a different way of thinking in which therapists and clients can join together against anorexia and bulimia. The therapy transcripts are inspiring and compelling. The chapter on how parents can become allies in the fight against anorexia and bulimia is one that I intend to rely on in my work―not only to instill hope, but to offer pragmatic, effective possibilities. Thank you Rick Maisel, David Epston, and Ali Borden for this amazing labor of love.” (Jill Freedman, MSW, co-director of the Evanston Family Therapy Center of Evanston, Illinois, and coauthor of Narrative Therapy: The Social Construction of Preferred Realities)

Waiting for this Great Book!
By Jenni Schaefer
I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

I was thrilled to see that the book vividly illustrates the vicious dialogue that occurs between the eating disorder and the individual who suffers with it. Throughout my recovery, psychotherapist and author Thom Rutledge encouraged me to practice this very dialogue between my true self (Jenni) and my eating disorder (`Ed') over and over again, which was crucial to my finding the amazing freedom I experience today.

Biting the Hand that Starves You includes many uplifting, inspirational personal accounts that reveal people can and do beat anorexia/bulimia! Within the book, the authors compassionately share how you can really make practical steps to join the ranks of those who already walk that path of independence.

Unlike many other books, Biting the Hand that Starves You goes a step beyond just focusing on how to recover from specific eating disordered behaviors. It also talks about moving on and reclaiming your life --- providing great insight on overcoming perfectionism, taking risks, and even pursuing dreams and passions.

This is one book that I am glad I came across on the shelves of eating disorder literature. I just wish it would have appeared a little bit sooner!

As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life. Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.

While the authors are not the first professionals to draw on `insider knowledges' (the knowledges of people with first-hand experiences of anorexia/bulimia), the prominence and the respect accorded to such knowledges is unprecedented. The result is a book that speaks compellingly of anorexia/bulimia, and crucially, does so in a manner that is never patronising, pathologising or didactical.

Providing exciting new ways of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia, the book engenders a sense of hope - a 'commodity' that is often desperately lacking, yet so vital when it comes to resisting anorexia/bulimia.

I highly recommend the book to all readers, from those struggling with anorexia/bulimia, to their family and friends, and health professionals.

This is just an awesome book. As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way. Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest. great!

Victims, Perpetrators or Actors: Gender, Armed Conflict and Political Violence, by Caroline O.N. Moser, Fiona C. Clark

Increasing levels of global conflict and political violence, as well as the higher profile of many 'simmering' confrontations, provide critical challenges for development theorists and practitioners. While numerous countries have endured decades of armed conflict, others live under the permanent menace of political violence. When peace accords are signed, economic and social violence often increase, particularly during the fragile transition to 'permanent' peace. Throughout, the gendered impacts of armed conflict and political violence are key issues.

The objective of this book is to provide a holistic analysis of the gendered nature of armed conflict and political violence, and a broader understanding of the complex, changing roles and power relations between women and men during such circumstances. Currently armed conflict and political violence are predominantly viewed as 'male domains', perpetrated by men, whether as armed forces, guerilla groups, paramilitaries or peacemakers. The unavoidable, or deliberate, involvement of women has received far less attention with a tendency to portray a simplistic division of roles between men as aggressors, and women as victims, particularly of sexual abuse. Consequently the gendered causes, costs and consequences of violent conflicts have been at best underrepresented, while more often misrepresented.

Through empirical case studies from different regions of the world written by authors from both North and South, the book aims to address four key issues; first, that men and women are both actors and victims throughout violent conflict; second, that the stages of conflict (pre, during and post) are all parts of a complex iterative process rather than self-contained phases with gendered implications throughout; third, that political, economic and social violence form a continuum with their impact requiring gender analysis; and fourth that local, community organizations run and managed by women play a key role throughout conflict situations not only for the provision of basic needs, but also occupying 'advocacy space', and fostering the trust and collaboration - the 'social capital' - that are so critical in reconciliation processes.
