Boone needed to get the girl!

While I enjoyed this book I can’t truthfully say that Bride on the Run is my favorite in the Runaway Bride Series. (That would be There Goes the Bride) However, I was thrilled to see that Boone received his own story. I had felt bad for him when Annamae broke her engagement to him in The Wedding Auction. He really was not a full-fledged character in that book so I was glad to see him fleshed out in this one. The author’s di a great job expanding his character so that the reader could understand his calm, detached controlled approached to life. I liked Valerie and her self-reliance, so that she could land on her feet when life went downhill for her. Really these characters were not so much opposites as they were of on opposite’s sides of one issue, the radio talk show.

My biggest problem was with the contrived plot about her having to attend the Gala with Boone. I can’t see a famous baseball player needing to resort to that kind of blackmail. I got that he is not wanting a real date that might begin to cling but surely he would know someone who would willingly be his public date only. I just never could get my head around that to find it plausible so that is why it lost .25 of a point. I think just needing to confront Serena /Valerie would have been enough of a plot device. However, remember this is one reader’s opinion only.

Overall a neat little romance with some intrigue and danger. All of that ties up nicely at the end with Boone getting the girl this time.

Excellent end to the series and my favorite of the group!

I really enjoyed this book, it neatly brings everything around and makes sure everyone gets their happy ending. I have read all the books in this series and this is one of my favorites, it can be read stand alone but I recommend the whole series as it is quite fun. I loved Valerie, she was a pretty awesome character, she is smart and strong willed and determined to live beyond the reach of her powerful (and dirty) family. From the beginning of this series I thought Boone was a good guy, if a little misguided and this story just proves it. Yes he can come off as overbearing and high handed but he is also very relatable (you know for a pro athlete). I enjoyed watching each of these characters grow and watching them grow together. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I was a little unsure about reading this book because the cover makes the story look like a very light romance involving biker people. These two ideas are not my favorite subjects for a book. However, having read books by Catherine Mann and Joanne Rock before, I knew that they did not usually write those kinds of books. I am so happy that I finally took the time to read the book because I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Valerie Dimitri is a woman who is trying to live her life separately from all of her questionable relatives, except her father. Unfortunately, she is walking down the aisle at her own wedding before she realizes that her fianc� is just as bad as her relatives. She runs away on her father’s motorcycle and changes her name.

She is now the owner of a lucrative call-in-for-advice sex phone show. Unfortunately she gave bad advice to Boone Sullivan, a popular baseball player, whose fianc�e left him. He finds Valerie and wants her to publicly tell everyone that she was wrong. This sets up many problems that lead Valerie and Boone to run away with each other.

I found this book very difficult to put down until I finished the entire story. The main characters, Valerie and Boone, are extremely likeable people. He is the ideal boyfriend. He is handsome, gentle, caring and anything else a woman might want. Valerie is attractive, independent and caring. Boone finds Valerie so attractive that he becomes side-tracked his original reason for finding her.

This is the fourth book in this series by these authors, but truthfully I had no idea when I was reading this book. The other couples in the book did not need any other introduction. And the breakup of Boone and his ex-girlfriend was so very well explained that I thought I knew everything. However, I loved the book so much that I went to buy the other books in the series, and I realized that every couple, including Boone and his ex-friend had their own books.

It takes fantastic writers to let us read the fourth book in a series and never once realize that characters were in other books. And, these too authors are fantastic. The characters in this book are likeable people we can relate to even though their circumstances are quite different. These characters are so well-defined that I feel as though I know them. The plot is exciting and also well-developed with several unexpected twists and turns. By the end of the book, I knew that I wanted to read all of the other books in the series!
I especially enjoyed reading about the behind-the-scenes life of a major league baseball player and their wives/girlfriends.

British writer Fforde (The Rose Revived, 1996) returns, this time exhibiting a spirited sense of humor, a light touch, and a real sense of how families work. Althea Farraday is, at 40, perfectly content with her life. She has three good-natured teenagers, an ex-husband she was more than glad to say good-bye to, a lovely house in the countryside with plenty of space to garden (her passion), and a pleasant job at a local school. Her life is thrown into an uproar, however, when in rapid succession (1) she loses her job, (2) Frederick--the ex- -decides he just might want her back, (3) her loving yet high- maintenance younger sister announces that she's pregnant, (4) she meets an immensely attractive (and already involved) architect named Patrick, and (5) she wins a contest to create her dream garden at the famous Chelsea Flower Show. To Althea's surprise, not long after she meets Patrick, his secretary/lover Topaz, a twentysomething with an aerobicized body and expensive tastes, runs off with Frederick, leaving Patrick suddenly single. Then, to Althea's additional surprise, Patrick announces that he finds her as fascinating as she finds him. But consumed with her children and not wanting them to be upset by a new man's appearance in their life, and consumed also with her money problems and with the upcoming Chelsea show, Althea turns a blind eye to Patrick's affections (with one glaring exception--a night of passion that she can't seem to forget). After much interfering by those who love her most--including her three spirited kids--she manages to iron out the kinks in her life to everyone's satisfaction. Althea, the womanizing Frederick, the charming Patrick, the shallow Topaz, and the snobbish but warmhearted Juno, not to mention Althea's children (the eldest of whom is a Buddhist), are all cleverly, endearingly, and realistically rendered. Charming light romance with some untraditional twists

Having enjoyed "Stately Pursuits," I wasn't disappointed with "Wild Designs." That the heroine has some "unromantic" traits from a traditional standpoint -- she is slightly older, divorced, with 3 teenaged kids, no job and major money woes -- only made the story more enjoyable. Occasionally the British slang escaped me (e.g. what does it mean to be "Pommish"?) and I thought Althea did altogether too much sighing and bursting into tears when people left the room (the constant self-denial for the sake of the children routine made her a bit too martyrish) but overall a fun, funny, enjoyable book for those who are sick of Oprah-book-club angst.

The Best of Katie Fforde

I've read all of Katie Fforde's books and Wild Designs is the best yet. I guess I identify more with Althea. She may be pushing 40 and devoted to her kids, but she still has a wonderful sense of humor and is such a "real" person. Fforde writes with such wit and gentle concern for people, you really come to care about the characters. The love story between Patrick and Althea seems genuine and you come away believing that they will live happily every after. The supporting characters are, as always with Fforde, strong and really make the book. Is this deep, heavy literature? No. But it's not all fluff either, and Fforde truly writes well.

Charming Read!

This was my first experience reading anything author, Katie Fforde has written. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laugh at loud funny and a real page turner. The main character, Althea is so likable you find yourself really cheering her on. I would have liked to have read about Patrick's life a bit more. I felt there were aspects of his character that could have been explored further, but it doesn't take away from the story at all. I'm definately going to read some more of this author's books.

While quotable, and will excite you for the movie, the book itself isn't going to leave a long lasting impression.

Overview/ Review (with Spoilers)

Everything, Everything is similar to Recovery Road in terms of format. It is setup like a diary, though unlike Recovery Road it has pictures, and each would be chapter is short. However, with a movie coming up this August, starring Amandla Stenberg and Anika Noni Rose, you know I couldn’t resist. Though, let me tell you, this is by no means the best YA novel I’ve ever read.

Characters & Storyline

Since she was a baby, Madeline hasn’t left her house. Her mother, a doctor, has diagnosed her with SCIDs (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) after her getting gravely ill as a baby. What this basically does is turn her into a bubble child (Think Jake Gyllenhaal’s Bubby Boy). Which, if you saw the movie, you’ll remember means a lot of remodeling of the family home in order to accommodate the disease. So, with some money Maddy’s mom came into, she is able to redo the house to keep Maddy healthy.

Thus leading to, for more than 15 some odd years, the only people Maddy interacting with being her mom and nurse Carla. However, then comes Olly, a boy who moves in next door. His curiosity, his being new to the area, draws him to the cute girl who just watches people from the window. So, thanks to a bit of perseverance, and Maddy’s own curiosity, they become friends and so blooms the desire to become something more. But is that possible when Maddy can’t do things normal girls do? Will Olly, considering his family situation, as well as the ability to meet tons of girls at school, really give him the time to deal with the frustration which is having to adjust his life to meet the requirements of what he needs to do just to see Maddy? Well…

Highlights

Maddy and Olly’s Relationship Is Adorable

No matter what the YA novel is, pretty much it is the relationships and/or the friendships, that keep you interested. Especially in books like these which don’t have their lead with some serious sort of affliction which can give the reader a quick shock or scare. So, it makes it where as you read Maddy meeting and getting to know Olly, it is very cute. After all, once you take into account how isolated Maddy has been, and this is probably one of the few boys her age she has had the chance to interact with, it makes you a bit nostalgic.

This is, of course, assuming you are my age, nearly a decade away from Maddy’s, and reading her talk about the butterflies and how being within a couple of feet from someone you are into makes the hairs on your arms stand. All of it, truly, reminds you of what it was like to be young and have a full-fledged, it could happen, type of crush. The kind you dream about and so much more.

It’s Not Too Heavy or Sensationalized

I think I’m not alone in saying that the YA novel genre has become saturated with drug addiction, accidental deaths, various kinds of abuse, and with that it makes books which don’t include that seem tame. Heck, they seem boring in comparison. For, after all, books are about escapism, going into someone else’s world, usually more interesting than yours, and getting away. Yet, at the same time, books are also about finding someone, or something, to relate to, despite your difference.

Maddy’s life is bare. She has her mom, Carla, and a computer she strangely only does school work on. Even when Olly enters her life, there is nothing sensationalized about their relationship. He isn’t some bad boy she is trying to save nor is he just some curious dude who is bored.

In a lot of ways, Everything, Everything reminds you that storytelling, and coming of age, isn’t just about having sex for the first time, your first drink, your first smoke, or what often are considered things that adults do. It’s about experiencing life with the only influence your parents having is how they live by example and you deciding what to, or not to, take from that. Which includes how you handle being offered sex, drugs, and etc., as well as how you handle tragedy, how you are as a friend or partner when that other person is hurting and more.

Overall: Mixed (Borrow)

While I really have nothing but praise for Everything, Everything here is the thing. It’s not for everyone. This book isn’t about escapism but providing perhaps a character to relate to. Hence why Maddy is Black and Asian, just like Nicola Yoon’s children will be. This book, in a way, is about breaking the mold, not giving in to the need for sudden shocks and the usual beliefs of what teens get themselves, and each other, into. This book is for those who may have issues with their parents, maybe never been kissed, but nonetheless are completely normal. With that, as much as the book has quotable lines up the ying yang, it doesn’t really bring me to say you should buy it nor can I strongly recommend it. It’s a quick read which won’t be taxing on your time and emotions but with it just being cute, even with Maddy’s diagnosis, it doesn’t come up with ways to make you wanna read this over and over again. As much as we get to know Maddy and Olly, as well as their friends and family, they don’t leave a strong impression for they are so normal that, minus or plus one or two things, you probably already know someone like them.

Hence the Mixed (Borrow) label for while those prepping for the movie I think may enjoy the insight, and surely will look forward to certain moments in the movie, I think on its own Everything, Everything may do things differently, but not in such a way it becomes exemplary.

I have read many books in my 23 years of life. And I am those type of people who fall head over heels in love with certain books. This is one of them. The writing is beautiful, you fall in love with the characters in this book and honestly, I just could not put this book down. Throughout my day I could not wait until I reunited with this story,

You have to read this book, it will definitely change the way you see and appreciate things.

Feeling let down...

I purchased this book because I am one of those people who needs to read the book before seeing the film adaptation. Usually the book far surpasses the movie. In this case, I hope not. There was a lot of "filler" and blurbs like reading a 16 year old's tweets. There were instances where a couple pages were taken up by short sentences and doodles, where I was actually craving details. The ending is a let down. Bland and uneventful. The entire book leaves me feeling like I was given a PBand J when I was promised a filet....if that makes sense.

This book really helps get into the nitty-gritty of any character. It uses simple texts and it is easy to find the exact kind of character you want to create. I discovered some character traits I hadn't even thought of before reading this book. Great tool, it will always be next to my dictionary on my desk.

A great resource, unfortunately misunderstood by some

I almost passed on this book due to some of the negative reviews here, but I'm glad I didn't. I spotted this on the shelf at a local book store and sat down with it for ten minutes. After that I bought it without hesitation. I'm only knocking one star off because it could be better organized (mostly inconsistencies in presentation, though it's easy to read, it would just be easier to scan through with a little reworking).

I think most of the negative reviewers were either expecting a book about creating characters (similar to Orson Scott Card's wonderful Characters and Viewpoints, for example), or were expecting an in depth discussion of psychological issues. This book is neither of those. I'd almost call it an overview of armchair psychology, in that is briefly discusses the behaviors most commonly associated with various disorders and life circumstances, but doesn't get into the subtleties or the exceptions. For example, the traits listed for first born children don't really fit me, but they do apply to most other first born children I've known. On the other hand, one of the personality types fits me perfectly (The Creative), and people I've known with various disorders are certainly present in the descriptions given, even if it doesn't all apply.

All of this is merely a starting point, a list of the most common traits associated with these topics. Nothing is set in stone, there are no "rules" for how to apply this information. Personally, I found this to be very helpful. For example, I was having some trouble defining an important character in a story I'm working on. At first, he was basically a collection of traits designed to serve the plot. That's fine, except that he was so important I needed him to breath, but was having trouble nailing down interesting but believable behaviors for him. After going through the personality types, it was obvious that he was a Manipulator type. Not 100%, but then no one is. The brief description and list of internal traits and interpersonal behaviors got me thinking in new directions about how he sees himself and how he acts towards others. I didn't take the traits listed and make him exactly that, because then he would be simply a stereotype, rather I took what was there as a starting point, threw half of it away, and meshed what was left with what I already had. Voila, I now have a more interesting character who rings true, and drives the story forward without being simply a plot device.
