About the Author

Martin Wight was born in 1913, and died in 1972. This book, edited by his wife, Gabriele Wight, and his colleague, Dr. Brian Porter, brings together some of his previously unpublished material. Mrs. Gabriele Wight married Martin Wight in 1952. She co-edited another of Martin Wight's posthumous works, International Theory: The Three Traditions in 1991, which is now regarded as a classic. Dr Brian Porter was successively tutored and supervised by Martin Wight. He co-edited Wight's International Theory: The Three Traditions with Mrs Gabriele Wight in 1991.

About the Author
R.T. Floyd is in his thirty-second year of providing athletic training services for the University of West Alabama. Currently, he serves as Director of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training for the UWA Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center, Program Director for the CAAHEP accredited athletic training education program, and as Chair and professor in the Department of Physical Education and Athletic Training. A licensed athletic trainer and emergency medical technician, Dr. Floyd is a certified member of numerous professional organizations including the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the Athletic Equipment Managers’ Association. He also retains active membership in the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He represents the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association (SEATA) and District IX of the NATA as District Director to the NATA Board of Directors. He also serves as Member Development Chair on the NATA Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors. Floyd has served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic in his native Montgomery for 25 years, after spending two years on the annual event’s athletic training staff. He is a 1974 graduate of Lowndes Academy, where he worked as an all-sports athletic trainer for four years, before earning a B.S. and M.A.T. in Physical Education from UWA in 1980 and 1982, as well as an Ed.D. in Human Performance Studies from the University of Alabama in 1995. Floyd was named to the UWA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, the Alabama Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2004, and tabbed an "Outstanding Young Men of America" in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986. He was presented the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award by the NATA in 2003 and received the organization’s Service Award in 1996. He received the District IX Award for Outstanding Contribution to the field of Athletic Training by SEATA in 1990 and the organization’s highest award, the Award of Merit, in 2001. In 2004, he was inducted into the Alabama Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame. He was named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2005. In 1996 he was presented the UWA Achievement Award by the University of West Alabama National Alumni Association. In 1997, the UWA Faculty and Board of Trustees recognized Floyd for outstanding achievement in scholarship, teaching, and leadership by presenting him with a Loraine McIlwain Bell Trustee Professorship. Previously, Floyd served as President of the UWA Faculty Senate and completed two terms as President of the Alabama Council of University Faculty Presidents.

fantastic book, a keeper, full of excellent knowledge for anyone interested in kinesiology/muscles/exercise

As students we purchase dozens of books because they are required for our courses. However, many of them are just boring, or just collect dust as they are barely used during the class.

However, the Manual of Structural Kinesiology by Floyd has been a fantastic read with excellent information, it is very well written and only covers what is essential to kinesiology students. All the muscles are displayed, explained, with pronunciation for those like myself who have a hard time reading some of these Greek/Latin terms. In the back of the book there is a chart that lists muscle groups precises, so you will better understand what muscles are being used during the most common exercises.

I will end it there. Seeing that you are here, you are probably buying this book for class. This book is worth buying for sure, don't rent it. Unlike other books, this one is something you will want to keep and highlight and book mark for sure. I will be going back and forth to this book for a very long time. I would highly recommend reading it in its entirety.

One of the most important things you will get out of this book is to ALWAYS make sure you have good posture... Stand of straight and keep the erector spinae muscles strong!

By far the best textbook I have ever bought in the three years I've been in college! If you are a kinesiology major or plan on going to PT, OT, Med, or chiropractic this bad boy will save your life with the anatomy portion of these fields (especially with AOII). Very well organized and well written. Definitely keeping this until it falls apart!

If you need to use the worksheets or coloring pages in the book, I don't suggest downloading to a Kindle. The companion website doesn't have print out worksheets :(

A great book for beginners

While there are a lot of beginner's woodworking books out there, most concentrate on using plywood and power tools. Wearing concentrates instead on traditional techniques, using hand tools and solid wood. He doesn't take anything for granted, either. The first 37 pages are concerned with how to use a plane, and Wearing doesn't assume you know anything. He starts with sharpening the iron and then goes through adjusting the plane, and how to true, smooth, and joint wood, and he does it in enough detail that the novice reader will have no difficulty turning rough lumber into boards.

From there Wearing goes on to joinery, using dowels, mortise and tenon, dovetails, and other traditional techniques. With those skills he shows you how to make a table, a carcase, drawers, doors, and other components of traditional furniture. He doesn't present any specific plans for these pieces; instead, he gives you the tools for building the furniture you want.

The book that I'd compare most closely to this one is Graham Blackburn's "Furniture Making" from which I leaned the essential skills of woodworking. But Wearing goes much further, and delivers a lot more detail and many more illustrations.

This book has been out of print for a number of years- hence the ridiculously high prices- but Chris Schwarz at Lost Arts Press has put it back in print in a beautifully hard bound edition for not very much money- I bought mine from Lee Valley for $21. You can get a PDF version for even less, and read it on your tablet or ebook. Highly recommended for those interested in learning traditional hand tool skills.

This book is great for beginners in woodworking. It provides lots of info regarding tools and techniques. I, as an engineer and long time luthier, did not learn much if anything from it.

Reingold, coauthor of Cognitive Connection , contends that VR technology will replace artificial intelligence as computing's cybernetic frontier. Current reports from Japanese and French VR labs call up ghosts of the development of the VCR and PC: technologies blazed by American inventiveness but paved to commercial success by countries with coherent industrial policies. Reingold's attempt to impart, in sentences of almost 100 words, a VR vision of his experiences in the "cybernetic sandbox" will mean little to readers unfamiliar with the programming problems of VR. Neologisms like "metaplay" and "teledildontics" (sex in a bed of VR) seem like carny-barker teasers, trivializing potential VR applications in engineering, medicine and education. A more linear approach to the topic might have better fit Reingold's purposes.

What they thought VR would be back in the 90's

A historical reference for what they thought VR would be back in the day. When this was written, it was thought that VR was right around the corner. Now 20+ years later, we are still just scratching the surface of what VR could be. Many of the authors ideas for where this could go have yet to be realized, so this book can still be mined for ideas and concepts.

A little dated, but still very pertinent

Back when Internet access was uncommon, Howard Rheingold was traveling the world, talking to VR researchers. He'd visit a lab, give them a presentation about what he'd seen in other places, then see what they had been developing. Then, he'd go to another lab, frequently in another country, and do the same, incorporating what he'd seen at the last place into his presentation. In this fashion, he was serving as a walking information nexus. Researchers who were largely unaware of other research going on in other places would learn about each other, and make contact with each other, as a result of his travels and his presentations.

Hell of a gig if you can get it. Where do I sign up for something like that? And get paid to do it?

Many of the technologies he writes about are still unknown, a decade later. They were cool when he wrote about them. They're still cool. They just haven't gone mainstream, for one reason or another.

If you buy and read this book today, you won't spend much time thinking "gee, that's old hat." Much of it is still quite eye-opening.

The guys in the UK who were using compressed air and hoses, where many people would be trying to use hydraulic actuators (much higher cost), were very interesting.

The differences between US and Japanese mindsets, WRT wearing headsets, was very amusing.

Creating a device which you can move with your hand, which simulates different textures, was intriguing. Not sure what the practical applications are for that, but it was definitely intriguing. There's a whole realm of VR there which I don't know that anyone is touching.

The high-speed motorcycle ride through Brooklyn, without physically moving, would be very fun to try. Even if it was film-based, back before the advent of cheap electronic displays. The fact that the guy even managed to incorporate wind, coming from different directions, and scent makes that one truly ground-breaking.

I'd love to see an updated version, with "where are they now" information on more of the projects. I can't imagine what else has been developed in the interim.

Sacred and Scary Reflections on Neo-Biologicial Civilization

First published in 1991, this is a gem that should be one of the first readings of anyone contemplated the sacred and the scary aspects of how humans, machines, and software are being changed by emerging information technologies. While there is a lot of focus on "cool tools" and all the paraphenalia of "virtual reality" qua artificial sensation and perception, the rock bottom foundation of this book can be found in Howard reflections on what it all means for the transformation of humans, business, and society in general.
